Hi,
I need more info. What kind of computer are you using (32bits, 64bits,
x86, Sparc, x64) ? What kind other peripherals, CPU, amount of RAM,
mainboard, etc ?
Could also please indicate what kind of messages you get when your
computer gets that kernel panic ? I know you may need to write it on
paper, but i neeed that info to further assist you. Please be accurate on
that.
Another thing: Are you 100% sure your computer hardware is OK ? Does it
work flawless without the aureal soundcard ? Does the aureal soundcard
work with kernel 2.6.10 for example (which i know should work OK) ? Either
your soundcard or computer may be broken, please proof/discard that cases
first.
Thanks.
Best Regards
Manuel Jander

I had similar issues on 64bit, there are a few changes i did in the above
files that make it work, but it's not yet cleaned up and some things just
have been commented out...
in a certain macro, some things are strictly for 32bit usage ( <<2 ), if
you change a few files like this, it'll work.
i can't make a patch yet, since i don't have alsa CVS, and further testing
is very uneasy, since i have only 1 64bit machine and it is this
server...

It seem that there are bugs in alsamixer 1.0.9a ( even CVS Rev 1.88 )
alsamixer -V capture
1) The volume (Line,CD,Mic,Video,Home,Aux,Mix,Mix Mono) cannot be
changed in view capture.
2) The Mic Select(Mic1,Mic2) and Mono Out(Mix,Mic) controls are missing
in view capture.
The above problems do not exist when using "alsamixer" or "alsamixer -V
playback"

"vortexcontrol" (Vortex Control Panel) can be obtained from the support
page in openvortex
http://savannah.nongnu.org/support/?func=detailitem&item_id=103017
If your au8810/au8830 has stereo codec
speaker-test -c 2 -t 2 -f frequency
If your au8810/au8830 has quad codec
speaker-tet -c 4 -t 2 -f frequency
The graphic equalizer will show left and right EQ peak values in
different bands when you change the frequency , please note that only
front channels are connected to the equalizer.

They have no "capture" volumes.

It's a so-called feature :)
All enum controls belong to playback view, so far.

In Capture view, beside Red (LR Catpure) can be toogled on/off at Line,
CD, Mic, Video, Phone, Aux, Mix and Mix Mono, it can also be toggled
on/off at the Capture Volume Control? ( another feature or bug )
According to page 42 of AC97 2.1 specification.
Record Control Select Register (index 1A h)
Use to select the record source independently for left and right.
Does it mean that the AC97 specification allow capture Left/Righ
channels from different source ? (i.e. Right channel of Mic and Left
channel of Aux )

I had similar issues on 64bit, there are a few changes i did in the above
files that make it work, but it's not yet cleaned up and some things just
have been commented out...
in a certain macro, some things are strictly for 32bit usage ( <<2 ), if
you change a few files like this, it'll work.
i can't make a patch yet, since i don't have alsa CVS, and further testing
is very uneasy, since i have only 1 64bit machine and it is this
server...

I try diff11.diff on alsa-driver-1.0.10 with minor changes in it. It works
for me. I use it for 2 weeks now and it works fine. I use mixer/equalizer
but don't even touch gameport, mpu and oss emulation.
My configuration:
P4 631 (em64t)
Aureal Vortex 2
Gentoo Linux 2005.1
Kernel 2.6.14-gentoo-r2 and 2.6.13-gentoo-r5 (vanilla sources + some
gentoo patches)
alsa-drivers 1.0.10 (not kernel one!)

Summary: kernel panic when trying to load module snd-au8830
Description:
kernel panic occurs on boot when system tries to load kernel module for
Aureal Vortex 2. The same thing happens when driver is compiled into
kernel, not module
======================================================================
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ponchick - 12-21-05 04:18
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I try diff11.diff on alsa-driver-1.0.10 with minor changes in it. It works
for me. I use it for 2 weeks now and it works fine. I use mixer/equalizer
but don't even touch gameport, mpu and oss emulation.
My configuration:
P4 631 (em64t)
Aureal Vortex 2
Gentoo Linux 2005.1
Kernel 2.6.14-gentoo-r2 and 2.6.13-gentoo-r5 (vanilla sources + some
gentoo patches)
alsa-drivers 1.0.10 (not kernel one!)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Raymond - 12-22-05 13:01
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is no need to change long eq_levels[32] to u16 eq_levels[64] in
au88x0_eqdata.c
vortex_EqHw_SetLevels() only setup 24 registeres.(i.e the 2x10 EQ peaks
and 4 other registers 0x2b3cc,0x2b3d8,0x2b3e4,0x2b3f0.)

Refer to those MMIO trace logs on your web site.
Not all MMIO are read/write in 32bits (e.g. hardware mixer input volume
seem to be read/write in 8-bits instead of 32bits)
One set of WT frequency register(0x20a) seem to be write in 16-bits and
0x20a is aligned to word boundary and not double word boudnary.
