I can understand that the problem is serious. But maybe there are a
couple of fixes:
1)Document this on the "compiling from source" page.
2)Add a check to the configure script, and print an error message.

The second option was implemented into cvs about 2 weeks ago:
http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/qemu/qemu/configure.diff?tr1=1.74&tr2=1.75&r1=text&r2=text

I don't understand your comment regarding 3.4. Anyhow, I will keep GCC
3.3.X in Mandriva Linux contribs as long as ATI drivers are linked
against libstdc++.so.5 + the life of our Corporate 3.X products. So,
you could still build QEMU/x86 with gcc 3.3.6 (as mentioned), which is
currently the case for Mandriva Linux x86-32 packages anyway.
Bye,
Gwenolé.
