Hardly and alsa-devel topic...
Have you checked which socket the line in is connected to.
If it is the Line in, you will get stereo,
If it is the Mic in, you will get a single channel.
If you are recording from the CD/Aux input on the sound card, linked 
internally to the CD player, then you might have a valid problem.

As a general note, playback features on cards has been well tested, 
capture features have not be so well tested, so you might just have 
noticed a bug.
