Hi,

I have been been trying to find a setup where I can run Borland C++ 4.5 on a
GNU/Linux box. Wine can't handle this application due to some ring 0
instructions.

I can get the 16-bit parts of Borland C++ working under windows 3.1 on
either MS-DOS 6.22 or a recent version of FreeDOS. I would now really like
to get the 32-bit tools working as well. Borland supported this on Windows
3.1 using win32s. However, I have been unable to get this installed
properly.

The win32s installer complains about not finding SHARE.EXE, but continues
anyway. But when I try to run the example Freecell program, I get the error
"Improper installation. Win32s requires W32S.386 to run. Re-install
Win32s."

Has anyone got Win32s working under dosemu? What versions of
dosemu/windows/os2/ms-dos/win32s do I need? I am currently using dosemu
1.3.3.

cheers,

John

Hello.

Unfortunately, no.
The win32s support in dosemu is still disabled - noone got
around to get it to work yet.
However, Borland C++ 4.5 AFAIK has also the text-mode tools
that use 32rtm. These can work under dosemu. The GUI tools
can not (yet).

Some future versions of dosemu, I am afraid.
Feel free to open the RFE on the dosemu tracker to make sure
the win32s support won't be forgotten again.
If you have any documentation on the w32s.386 interfaces -
that will help.

Also see this win32 emulator:
http://www.japheth.de/HX.html
It can work under dosemu and maybe it will help you, although
this is unlikely.

Hmm . . . if I can run the command line utilities, maybe I can make an
autoexec.bat which compiles my project and then quits dosemu. Then I could
hook that into M-x compile in Emacs.

I have filed the RFE. Unfortunately I don't have any such documentation.

cheers,

John
