follow: no put_page() if FOLL_GET not specified.

Seems that one of the side effects of the dirty pages patch in
2.6.17-rc4-mm3 is that follow_pages does a page_put if FOLL_GET is
not set in the flags passed to it. This breaks sys_move_pages()
page status determination.

Only put_page if we did a get_page() before.

[2/5] extract common code to have_task_perm()

Extract have_task_perm()

Various kernel function check if they are allowed to do something to another
task. The ones that I have found are

1. The check for kill permissions

2. sys_migrate_pages() checking if a process is allowed to
   migrate the pages of another process.

3. sys_move_pages() checking if a process is allowed to
   migrate individual pages that are part of another process.

Extract the common code in these checks to form a new function
in kernel/signal.c have_task_perm(task, capability). The check
is successful if

1. The current process has the indicated capability

2. The current effective userid is equal to the suid or uid
   of the target process.

3. The current userid is equal to the suid or uid of the
   target process.

Note that there are similar checks for uid/gid/euid that are
stored in a variety of structures in the kernel. Maybe those may also
be extracted by a similar function that would not take a task parameter
but an explicit specification of permission ids?

ptrace() has a variation on the have_task_perm() check in may_attach().
ptrace checks for uid equal to euid, suid, uid or gid equal to
egid sgid,gid. So one may not be able to kill a process explicyly
but be able to ptrace() (and then PTRACE_KILL it) if one is a member
of the same group? Weird.

Plus ptrace does not support eid comparision. So explicit rights
for ptracing cannot be set via the super user bit.

Maybe we could consolidate all these checks and make them work in
a coherent way? I dont think I am deep enough into this issue to
takle that though.

Fix up sys_move_pages()

1. Update comments and documentation.
2. Make the page array passed to sys_move_pages void **
3. Check for boundary conditions on the size of the pm array.
4. Use vmalloc for page array instead of kmalloc().
5. Process parameters before taking mmap_sem
6. Add the required call to migrate_prep().
7. Extract a couple of functions to simplify the function.
8. Add function prototype in include/linux/syscalls.h
9. Disambiguify the page status codes and the return code
   of the function.
10. Do not migrate reserved pages (zero pages etc)

Updated description of the function call:

move_pages() is used to move individual pages of a process. The function can
be used to determine the location of pages and to move them onto the desired
node. move_pages() returns status information for each page.

long move_pages(pid, number_of_pages_to_move,
		addresses_of_pages[],
		nodes[] or NULL,
		status[],
		flags);

The addresses of pages is an array of void * pointing to the
pages to be moved.

The nodes array contains the node numbers that the pages should be moved
to. If a NULL is passed instead of an array then no pages are moved but
the status array is updated. The status request may be used to determine
the page state before issuing another move_pages() to move pages.

The status array will contain the state of all individual page migration
attempts when the function terminates. The status array is only valid if
move_pages() completed successfullly.

Possible page states in status[]:

0..MAX_NUMNODES	The page is now on the indicated node.

-ENOENT		Page is not present

-EACCES		Page is mapped by multiple processes and can only
		be moved if MPOL_MF_MOVE_ALL is specified.

-EPERM		The page has been mlocked by a process/driver and
		cannot be moved.

-EBUSY		Page is busy and cannot be moved. Try again later.

-EFAULT		Invalid address (no VMA or zero page).

-ENOMEM		Unable to allocate memory on target node.

-EIO		Unable to write back page. The page must be written
		back in order to move it since the page is dirty and the
		filesystem does not provide a migration function that
		would allow the moving of dirty pages.

-EINVAL		A dirty page cannot be moved. The filesystem does not provide
		a migration function and has no ability to write back pages.

The flags parameter indicates what types of pages to move:

MPOL_MF_MOVE	Move pages that are only mapped by the process.

MPOL_MF_MOVE_ALL Also move pages that are mapped by multiple processes.
		Requires sufficient capabilities.

Possible return codes from move_pages()

-ENOENT		No pages found that would require moving. All pages
		are either already on the target node, not present, had an
		invalid address or could not be moved because they were
		mapped by multiple processes.

-EINVAL		Flags other than MPOL_MF_MOVE(_ALL) specified or an attempt
		to migrate pages in a kernel thread.

-EPERM		MPOL_MF_MOVE_ALL specified without sufficient priviledges.
		or an attempt to move a process belonging to another user.

-EACCES		One of the target nodes is not allowed by the current cpuset.

-ENODEV		One of the target nodes is not online.

-ESRCH		Process does not exist.

-E2BIG		Too many pages to move.

-ENOMEM		Not enough memory to allocate control array.

-EFAULT		Parameters could not be accessed.

Fix up sys_move_pages()

1. Update comments and documentation.
2. Make the page array passed to sys_move_pages void **
3. Check for boundary conditions on the size of the pm array.
4. Use vmalloc for page array instead of kmalloc().
5. Process parameters before taking mmap_sem
6. Add the required call to migrate_prep().
7. Extract a couple of functions to simplify the function.
8. Add function prototype in include/linux/syscalls.h
9. Disambiguify the page status codes and the return code
   of the function.
10. Do not migrate reserved pages (zero pages etc)

Updated description of the function call:

move_pages() is used to move individual pages of a process. The function can
be used to determine the location of pages and to move them onto the desired
node. move_pages() returns status information for each page.

long move_pages(pid, number_of_pages_to_move,
		addresses_of_pages[],
		nodes[] or NULL,
		status[],
		flags);

The addresses of pages is an array of void * pointing to the
pages to be moved.

The nodes array contains the node numbers that the pages should be moved
to. If a NULL is passed instead of an array then no pages are moved but
the status array is updated. The status request may be used to determine
the page state before issuing another move_pages() to move pages.

The status array will contain the state of all individual page migration
attempts when the function terminates. The status array is only valid if
move_pages() completed successfullly.

Possible page states in status[]:

0..MAX_NUMNODES	The page is now on the indicated node.

-ENOENT		Page is not present

-EACCES		Page is mapped by multiple processes and can only
		be moved if MPOL_MF_MOVE_ALL is specified.

-EPERM		The page has been mlocked by a process/driver and
		cannot be moved.

-EBUSY		Page is busy and cannot be moved. Try again later.

-EFAULT		Invalid address (no VMA or zero page).

-ENOMEM		Unable to allocate memory on target node.

-EIO		Unable to write back page. The page must be written
		back in order to move it since the page is dirty and the
		filesystem does not provide a migration function that
		would allow the moving of dirty pages.

-EINVAL		A dirty page cannot be moved. The filesystem does not provide
		a migration function and has no ability to write back pages.

The flags parameter indicates what types of pages to move:

MPOL_MF_MOVE	Move pages that are only mapped by the process.

MPOL_MF_MOVE_ALL Also move pages that are mapped by multiple processes.
		Requires sufficient capabilities.

Possible return codes from move_pages()

-ENOENT		No pages found that would require moving. All pages
		are either already on the target node, not present, had an
		invalid address or could not be moved because they were
		mapped by multiple processes.

-EINVAL		Flags other than MPOL_MF_MOVE(_ALL) specified or an attempt
		to migrate pages in a kernel thread.

-EPERM		MPOL_MF_MOVE_ALL specified without sufficient priviledges.
		or an attempt to move a process belonging to another user.

-EACCES		One of the target nodes is not allowed by the current cpuset.

-ENODEV		One of the target nodes is not online.

-ESRCH		Process does not exist.

-E2BIG		Too many pages to move.

-ENOMEM		Not enough memory to allocate control array.

-EFAULT		Parameters could not be accessed.

[5/5] move_pages: 32bit support (i386,x86_64 and ia64)

sys_move_pages() support for 32bit (i386 plus ia64 and x86_64 compat layers)

Add support for move_pages() on i386 and also add the
compat functions necessary to run 32 bit binaries on x86_64 and ia64.

Add compat_sys_move_pages to both the x86_64 and the ia64 32bit binary
layer. Note that both are not up to date so I added the missing pieces.
Not sure if this is done the right way.

This probably needs some fixups:

1. What about sys_vmsplice on x86_64?

2. There is a whole range of syscalls missing for ia64 that I basically
   interpolated from elsewhere.

I've been thinking of dropping CONFIG_IA32_SUPPORT completely from ia64.
I've heard no complaints that new syscalls are not being added to the
ia32 compat side ... which is an indication that people are not
actively using this.  Some OSDs have been building with this
turned off for a while now (perhaps in preparation for "Montecito"
which no longer has h/w support for the x86 instruction set, or
perhaps because it represnts a huge block of lightly/barely tested
code that will have its share of support issues).

I suppose I should do this by adding an entry to
 Documentation/feature-removal-schedule.txt

Any thoughts on the timeline for this?  Is Dec 31, 2006 too soon?
(or not soon enough!?).

I don't think people actively look in there.  You'd also need to do
something like mark it CONFIG_BROKEN, which will wake people up and might
make them go look to see what happened.  Updating the now-BROKEN help text
would make that nice and easy for them.

I vaguely remember some BIOS code having to be executed in ia32 mode in 
order to make some device drives work?

If that is the case then we cannot drop ia32 support at all.

Or maybe the people using ia32 compatibility are just running big
apps like Firefox or Open Office that are non-trivial to build for
ia64, but may not care as much about shiny new syscalls.

I'm a bit worried about this.  As I understand it, the Intel
software emulator is not open-source.  There may be distros
like Debian and customer environments where that's not a viable
alternative.

If we remove CONFIG_IA32_SUPPORT, every ia64 box will require
the Intel emulator (or QEMU or some other ill-defined solution)
in order to run ia32 code, even though every processor in the
field today supports ia32 in hardware.

It doesn't feel right to me to remove functionality from machines
in the field and offer only a proprietary alternative.

Firefox has been ported ... it came as a native ia64 binary
rpm on the last OSD install disk that I put on my workstation.
Dunno about Open office though.

The instruction emulating part of the Intel solution is indeed
closed source (the syscall emulation part is open, so you could
rip out the closed source part and replace it with something else,
but so far nobody has cared enough to do so ... perhaps someone
will step up to the plate when they get a Montecito and still
want to run x86 binaries on it).

But how many of the in-the-field systems are still being updated
with the latest kernels?  I know there are a few die-hards determined
to use their BigSur boxes until they eventually fail.  But this
does tell me that I should be looking at a much longer timescale
to drop this.  A new Madison box bought today should be usable
for some years to come.

The alternative to dropping support for CONFIG_IA32_SUPPORT is
to find someone to maintain it ... right now it doesn't get much
of my time, so it is a ticking quagmire of untested code.

Native port of Open Office is supposed to be very hard because the
UNO bridge code is specific to each architecture.

Acrobat is the only thing I use it for...  and firefox when I *have*
to view flash movies.

I think that IA32 support is important for those (few) of us who use
Zx2000 or similar as workstations on Debian.  And I'm hoping that that
number will increase now that some of the 2nd generation clusters are
reaching eol, so there should be starting to be zx6000 on the 2nd hand
market relatively cheap.  I've seen a few here for $1300AUD --- and
even as old (1.2GHz) machines they beat the pants off anything else
you can buy here at that price.

The new system calls are irrelevant for most apps.

I will offer the opinion that support of the IA32 ABI is
important.  That is, the ability to install and run
an IA32 binary (doesn't matter how, just matters it is
the same binary as used on an IA32 machine).
And I am certainly happy with the IA32-EL approach.

This feature provides a bridge for a customer with certainly
a lot more IA32 machines in their shop.  No customer will
have a dominate number of IA64 systems.  Hence the
ability for the IA64 to fit it and blend it, and run
any code there, and in addition do its special work,
is a much, much easier sell.
The reverse story, that IA64 runs only IA64 binaries,
is a tough sell.

A twist on that theme is to merge the parts of ia32 emulation in the
ia64 kernel with the x86_64 architecture.  Where that makes sense,
anyway.  Large portions of the ia32 emulation are already common with
other CONFIG_COMPAT architectures, so reducing the amount of code
reduces the amount of potentially buggy code ;-)

A first step on that road would be to create one syscall table for
i386/ia32 emulation.  Take a look at arch/parisc/kernel/syscall_table.S
for one approach to this.  The interesting part to this is that some
syscalls seem to require different treatment on ia64 and x86_64 (last
time I looked at doing this anyway).  That can be handled with some
additional ENTRY_ types.

I've been meaning to get round to this for a while, but somehow I never
quite have time.

That would be good ... currently there is 5674 lines below arch/ia64/ia32/
If the majority of that were shared with x86_64 (which has a much
bigger testing population than ia64), it would help enormously.

I'll give it some love. I've got an old BigSur proto and a rx5670 running
Debian so it shouldn't be very hard to keep an i386 chroot tested.

That and I already pay attention to syscall additions when I update
the parisc syscall table.

Debian is looking at implementing "multiarch", a way to have libraries
for multiple binary targets install in the same system root.

be a shame to see this not happen.

I also agree with Bjorn that the propriatary tool shouldn't be the only
way. To the Intel people on the lists that work on this, what is Intel's

You could just freeze the code down to "security fixes only". 
This means new system calls wouldn't need to be added and most programs
fallback if they don't see the latest and great syscalls anyways.
On the other hand it is usually not very hard to add new syscalls
and most of the other code is shared now anyways.

Open-sourcing this code has been discussed many times inside Intel, but
(AFAIK) the answer is still "no".

I try to stay away from legal questions as far as possible but one
nugget that may be worth pointing out is that Intel's ia32 engine is
very much a stand-alone "module", just like the ia32 hardware-engine
in the pre-Montecito IPF CPUs.  AFAIK, the exact same binary is even
used both for the Windows and Linux versions of IA32EL.  Thus, Debian
ought to be able to treat the issue similar to the msttcorefonts.
That is, if you installed the (not-yet-existing) ia32el Debian
package, you'd install all the open-source pieces directly from
Debian, and then go out and fetch the proprietary ia32 engine from
Intel's web-site.  IIRC, some tweaks may be needed to Intel's
website/license to really enable that but I think the key to making
this work would be to view Intel's ia32 engine as a CPU which happens
to be implemented in software.

That's how it was explained to me too.  Looking at the binary blob
part of the ia32-el package:

$ file /usr/lib/ia32el/ia32exec.bin
/usr/lib/ia32el/ia32exec.bin: MS-DOS executable (EXE), OS/2 or MS Windows

it seems that the implementation matches the slideware :-)

The rest of the ia32-el package is open source ... which should
provide enough documentation on how the OS-level code interfaces
to the instruction execution engine to allow it to be replaced.

Possibly a stupid question, but I couldn't find any information in the
(afaik) only released Montecito documentation (the Optimization guide).

Has the br.ia completer been removed from the architecture? Or will
it generate a trap which can be caught and the translator invoked?

The doc only references added insns, not those removed from the arch.

Linux on Montecito will set the psr.di bit which will cause br.ia's and
jmpe's to create the disabled instruction set transition fault.

Just for clarity, what platforms would be affected by this?  I thought
the non-free software was needed for Montecito+, and that Madison
worked fine w/o it.

My vote is not to drop the "free" kernel support, though I'm also not
offering to take over maintenance so it probably doesn't count for
much.

Yup, Firefox runs nicely, now we just need gnash to get there so it
can display some of those %#@%#$$@# sites that insist on using flash.

I took a look at trying to build Open Office about two month ago. All
I can say is YUCK! The build system is disgusting and the arch
specific bits are a nightmare to try and mess with - after wasting a
day on it I concluded that it wasn't worth waking up in the middle of
the night shaking and all soaked in sweat over it. Back to using
ia32el for it, which unfortunately makes an already utterly slow
application seem like it's running on my old C64.

Anyone who manages to get Open Office building natively is very brave
:)

Konqueror can run flash (or any other 32bit plugin) via an external
helper.  Works pretty well.

Indeed.  In addition to your list ooo out of the sun cvs isn't even
64bit clean.  RH and Novell people are working on that though.

You are correct.  All cpu implementations prior to "Montecito" have
h/w support for x86 instructions.  "Montecito" does not.  You'll
have to make your own bets and guesses about whether this would ever
be re-introduced.

"Freeze" is pretty much where it has been for a while.  This thread was
started by a patch that caught up all the missing x86 system calls. Even
though the handlers all point into generic code, I'm always a bit twitchy
about including code that hasn't been exercised even once.  This would be
a lot easier if people adding system calls provided at least an example
program that uses the call ... even better would be an actual test-suite
that runs through all the options and failure cases for the call.  But
the recent slew of new syscalls have mostly lacked any such trimmings.

The kernel doesn't handle BIOS code execution ... so the value of
CONFIG_IA32_SUPPORT makes no difference to this.

The kernel doesn't handle BIOS code execution ... so the value of
CONFIG_IA32_SUPPORT makes no difference to this.

I dropped the ia64 bits - looks like that's all on death row anyway.

The omission of sys_vmsplice() from the x86 syscall table does appear to
be, umm, a glaring omission.  Jens, what's up?
