I got a few error messages on a server machine when I installed it with an
Intel P4 with the "Virtual dual processor". The message said to contact
this address. There are symptoms of the machine hanging, so that it seems
to be running some parts (answers ping) but does not respond to service
requests (e.g. ssh) or console input. Kernel config is included

I think thats from a do_vfs_lock: VFS is out of sync message which I get a lot with 2.6, never seen those with 2.4 ...

I am not passing any special options in pxe or dhcp, so I think the kernel defaults should be used to mount the nfs root ...
The serverside export should be rw,no_root_squash,async.
