Hi all,
After much effort from Yuan Mu and Gong Jun from Winbond, and Rudolf
Marek and myself, the w83793 hardware monitoring driver is finally
ready to be merged upstream. I'm attaching the "final" version to this
mail, together with the patch adding the driver documentation. I will
send both patches to Linus in a few days, so the driver will make it
into 2.6.20.
Userspace support is already available in lm_sensors 2.10.1.
The Winbond W83793G/R is a complex chip with lots of features, and as a
result the driver is quite large. With 48 kB (source), it's the 6th
biggest hardware monitoring driver in the Linux tree. Thus we do expect
that some bugs are still hiding in the driver. Please help with testing
if you can.
Once again I'd like to thank Winbond for providing documentation and
drivers for their chips, it's really great.

No, I don't have a motherboard with the W83793 chip. Rudolf made basic
testing using an emulated chip.

Then, next time please send your 793 patches to us so that we can test
it from here. I think it's Winbond's responsibilities to make sure your
793 patches work before checking into kernel.
Thanks,

Thanks for your proposal. It took me so much time to review the driver
that was provided by Winbond that I didn't dare asking you for more
help afterwards. It's not too late though. The w83793 driver is in
Linus' tree already, but kernel 2.6.20 is still in -rc stage. Feel free
to test the driver in 2.6.20-rc1 or later, with lm_sensors 2.10.1 or
later, and report to us if anything doesn't work as expected. We can
send bugfixes to Linus at any time.

Hi Jean:
Since you don't have any motherboard with 793 on it, send us any
patches you would like to test. Also, we are looking for CHEAP 793
motherboard (less than RMB 1500 = 1500 / 8 = USD 200), if you know of
any, please let us know.
We will ship one motherboard with 627DHG to David soon.
To JGong:
Please read this the attached email from Jean and do the testing on
our 793 platform and report result (right or wrong) to Jean, Rudolf and
lm-sensors mailing list and CC me. I would like to know if 793 driver in
the Linux kernel tree does work on Winbond 793.
Best regards,
dz

I spent some time searching for one, but unfortunately all motherboards
I found having a Winbond W83793G were expensive server boards by either
Tyan or Supermicro, nothing below USD 500. If I ever hear about a cheap
board, I'll let you know.

The mailing list is still CCed, I think others might have some ideas how to
issue right google queries.
1) User reports - we added support to sensors-detect and let the user report to
us that they have this chip
As soon as the chip is added to sensors-detect the more chance that user with
such chip will show up ;)
2) google.com
filetype:pdf W83793G
or
filetype:pdf W83793
This query will find 3 motherboards
Similar way for w83627dhg. This might be too restrictive
More could be found via:
W83627DHG motherboard super
W83793G motherboard

I searched for "w83793g" in google. And I also searched the lm-sensors
mailing list for reports of users interested in the driver. Sometimes I
had to download the motherboard manual for confirmation. The list I
came up with is:
Tyan Tempest i5000VF (S5370)
Tyan Tempest i5000PT (S5383)
Supermicro PDSMU
Supermicro X7DBR-3
Supermicro X7DBR-E
Supermicro H8DAE-2
I agree with you that this kind of information is rather difficult to
find. Unfortunately, most vendors do not mention the name of the
hardware monitoring chip in the motherboard specification pages.

This is expected to be good, because we tested with the "emulator" for the chip.
If you want to try that out:
http://assembler.cz/download/w83793/i2c-stub.c
You need to replace original i2c-stub in kernel/driver/i2c/busses and of course
choose it in menuconfig. When inserted it will just create a fake i2c bus with
fake chip on address 0x2f. Then if the module w83793 is loaded it will find this
chip and use it. The i2c-stub fakes the chip registers, so the reads from the
chip are exactly the same as from real chip - but they dont change. The writes
work too, because the modified value is stored in fake chip register.
We tried that when I was done with modifications of the drivers, so we at least
knew that this basic test would pass ;)
> If you have any idea that wants to be tested on w83793, feel free to contact us.
I think better would be to test setting of limits of voltages, fans. The a bit
of trip points. So generally the writes to the chip.

You could try writing voltage, fan and temperature limits to make sure
it works OK. Also try setting limits too low and see if the ALARM flags
are set as expected.
Thanks,

Add to the list:
Asus DSBF-D
Asus DSBF-D/1U
Asus DSBF-D/SAS
But these are quite expensive server boards too :(

Hi, Jean:
I have accomplished the tests with your advice. I write the values to
them within the range of themselves, and here is the all the items
passed the test:
1) Temperature: ($i= 1->6)
temp$i_max
temp$i_max_hyst
temp$i_warn
temp$i_warn_hyst
temp$i_beep
2) Voltage: ($i=0->9)
in$i_min
in$i_max
in$i_beep
3) Smartfan2: ( $i=1->6 $j=1->7)
temp_critical
pwm_downtime
pwm_uptime
pwm$i_stop_time
pwm$i_start_time
pwm$i_nonstop
tolerance$i
temp$i_auto_point$j_pwm
temp$i_pwm_enable
temp$i_auto_channels_pwm
temp$i_auto_points$j_temp
4) Thermal cruise:($i=1->6)
thermal cruise$i
Alarm test:
I just modify the value above or below the critical value of
temperature, voltage, and fans to see whether there will be an alarm
signal, also works well.
Best regards
PI14

Well done, but what we need is one cheap board. Did you check the typical
price for the motherboards you listed above? If they are all expensive
server boards, it doesn't help :(
