Hi,

according to my post in http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-614771.html I was told to file that bug report to you.

Scenario:
I tried to install KDE4-svn on a PentiumIII notebook. The root partition on that notebook runs on a reiser4 partition. The partition was created without any additional options (no compress or encryption). After starting KDE4 I get that kernel oops.

Reproducable: always.
Steps to reproduce: Install kde4-svn on an reiser4 partition and start gdm, select kde4-svn and wait for a few seconds until kde4 stops loading.

dmesg:
...

As I read reiser4.patch you used was from kamikaze sources, and that
patch can be found here:
http://kamikaze.waninkoko.info/patches/2.6.23/kamikaze5/broken-out/reiser4-2.6.23-2.patch
Am  correct?

Hi, I'm hitting this bug (or possibly a related one) as well. I _was_ using the
patch listed above. I also tried with the just released official patch for
2.6.23 (the second one with NFS fixup). And have a slightly different callstack,
so I'm not 100% sure if it's the same bug or not. But the steps to reproduce are
the same, install kde4 (either the RC, or directly from SVN), and attempt to
start it.

(sorry about any weird wrapping, gmane won't let me post lines >80 characters)

Just encountered the same behavior:
 PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND

4298 user  20   0  220m  13m  10m R   99  0.3  59:37.59 dolphin

4811 user  20   0  151m  14m  12m R   98  0.4  14:51.42 okular

this problem is a pretty cpu-eater :D

load currently is at 2.85

those apps used to work fine with reiserfs3.6

I hope you're able to reproduce it (pretty simple: just execute kde4-apps or the
kde4-desktop)

Eventually I have launched kde4 with the attached patch.
The fixed problem is described in the patch header.
Would you please try this?

Thanks,
Edward.

P.S.
Kde4 is nice :)

[-- Attachment #2: reiser4-fix-null-pointer-dereference-in-sys_truncate64.patch --]
[-- Type: text/x-patch, Size: 16295 bytes --]

Problem:
Oops when starting kde4:
BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference
at virtual address 0000000c
printing eip: c025eba5 *pde = 00000000
Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP
last sysfs file: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1e.0/0000:04:04.0/resource
Modules linked in: thermal processor fan button

Pid: 3705, comm: kwrite Not tainted (2.6.23-mm1 #8)
EIP: 0060:[<c025eba5>] EFLAGS: 00010246 CPU: 0
EIP is at update_extents+0x44/0x2e7

Bug:
Trying to look at not persistent struct file in the
case of expanded truncate via sys_truncate64(path, length).

The fixup:
. Don't look at struct file at truncate_file_body();
. Add an inode *inode argument to the following
  functions to handle the case of not persistent
  struct file.
  . reiser4_write_extent();
  . reiser4_write_tail();
  . reiser4_update_extents();
Other changes:
. Add missesd identifier in some asserts.
. Comments cleanups.

great, just after I switched /var over to the ccreg40 plugin - which 'solved'
the problem too. ;)

Well, nothing lost. I will try the patch later today,

Thanks for your work.

Glück Auf,
Volker

I couldn't sleep anyway and since var was tarred up already ...

I did mkfs.reiser4 /dev/sda6 (the partition mounted as /var), applied your
patch, built the kernel, restored var, rebooted, and logged into kde4.

No oops, no problem.

So the patch seems to work.

Thank you very much!

That DID solve it !
Thanks a ton, Edward, kde4 and reiser4 is the REAL winning combination ;)
I've tried the patch on 2 different PCs and kde4 is flying fine so far,

there were some other little problems when launching bash-scripts from
within an reiser4 root-partition which should also be fixed by this
patch (I hope), I need to have a deeper look at that ..

reiser4 is feeling pretty stable & safe right now :)

Thanks again,
Mat

P.S.:
could you safe / host a copy of the original
http://pub.namesys.com/Reiser4/ToDo list or wiki so that people who
are interested in working on reiser4 can further do so before it (the
list) completely vanishes of the net ? (there are still copies in
google-cache)

Some updates are needed though. In particular, #14 should be marked
as "not done", as eventually Vladimir hasn't supplied a patch for this.

Thanks,
Edward.
