Sorry, I thought angstrom-2007-preferred-versions.inc was still required
by angstrom-2008.1.conf. But it isn't.
Things I've changed are:
navit: 0.0.1 to 0.0.3 (upstream major release, 0.0.3 built with speechd
support, tested by CoreDump)
gnuplot: 4.2.0 to 4.2.2 (upstream bugfix release, tested on Tosa)
qpegps: 0.9.3.0 to 0.9.3.1 (upstream bugfix release, 0.9.3.0 segfaults)
Regards
Gordon

Hm, but why that file is in .dev branch at all? What was idea of
removing 2007 .conf and leaving preferred-versions? Doing a grep, it is
referenced only by angstrom-2007-for-openmoko.inc, so shouldn't it be
merged there or renamed to make it clear that it relates more to
openmoko?
Alternatively, maybe indeed rename it to 2008 and start using right
away, as there're funky downgrades happen in 2008 already (abiword).
Anyway, here's what I have in it (the first 2 are gpephone-related,
old versions are non-buildable).

Or maybe fix those funky downgrades? (Or do both.)
I'm not convinced keeping DEFAULT_PREFERENCE="-1" in some recipes
forever just because some legacy distro once used that mechanism to
'select' an older version, when the newer version clearly works (or at
least is selected by angstrom-2007-preferred-versions.inc).

I shall rename it later when I get a chance to indicate only OpenMoko
use it.
Angstrom can then go forward with new prefferred versions for 2008.1

How about making it generic-preferred-versions.inc hence resurrecting
the "generic" distribution until we have the default versions configured
enough, so that you can build without setting a DISTRO?

Sure, I'm all for it too ;-).

It would be nice that someone did some explicit confidence testing
before removing DEFAULT_PREFERENCE="-1", though in this case the fact
that Angstrom 2007.12 shipped with it should be enough ;-).

You can't build without setting a distro since among other things,
SRCREV is broken if you do that.
Besides not being named 'generic', what are the arguments against making
angstrom the 'generic' distro in OE? It's the closest thing of showing
off all features of OE *and* doing it the OE-way.

It's the message it sends. By all means I want to keep the difference between
OE as a distribution building environment and the actual distributions. If we
lose this distinction OE becomes OE/Angstrom and people will think OE is just
about/for one distribution -- which it is not.

At the risk of putting words in to Mickey's mouth, my view a generic
distro is a generic.conf that contains the absolute minimum number of
lines required to build an image successfully. Maybe we could call it
minimal distro and remove generic?
Angstrom has features, generic does not.
The key is not to define the generic distro clearly and not let it
feature creap towards Angstrom. (Kind of like minimal-image trying to
get less minimal based on peoples viewpoint of what a minimal-image is)

IMHO, we shouldn't ditch "generic" distro. It's purpose should be to
enforce as little policy as possible. Thus, it will be good base for
adhoc, overlay, foreign, experiment distros. For example, openwrt-sdk
