Reiser4 Netbeans 6 problems

Hi, Edward.
Last week I reformat my Ubuntu 7.10 64bit system to try Reiser4 filesystem 
(actually I'm using reiserfs 3.6).
I put all my partition (even / and except boot) on reiser4 kernel was 2.6.24 
compiled in the kernel.

I got strange problems:
the first was with netbeans java IDE, when I was compiling in the window on 
the bottom of the screen I got only garbage (like little square) like when 
you have a different char set than the good one!
After that the java app was working but it was impossible to see compile 
warnings or errors.

The second thing that happened was that sometimes my kde 3 desktop became 
frozen, for example, konqueror window open then click on the cross, the 
system froze for 10 seconds then the window close and all was normal again.

I formatted with standard options and also standard mount options for all the 
drives and partition.

My system is a striker extreme board, intel core 2 duo 2.4 4 gb Kingston 
hiperX ram, 2 barracuda 500 Gb.

Do you have some suggestions expecially about the java stuff?
Now I'm back to reiser 3.6 because I need to work with netbeans!

Hi Paolo,

Interesting that you see the squares in the Netbeans output window.
I've seen them too but it didn't occur to me that it would be related
to Reiser4. I'm running on a Gentoo box, Athlon XP 2400+,  kernel
2.6.22 with Reiser4 on all partitions, Netbeans 6 built from sources.
I noticed that the squares appear initially but when the log grows
(over a few KiB), the squares turn to normal characters. To force the
log to grow, I changed the Ant verbosity to "verbose"
(Tools/Options/Miscellaneous/Ant).
Sometimes with a short log the blocks in the output window disappear
when the compilation or XML transformation is repeated.

Yes, I'm using noatime option for all partitions. Was there wrong?

Hi,  Dushan.
I think that it was happening something like this.
The overall imperssion that I had using the file system was of extremely fast 
moments with many lock intervals where the system was like frozen.
May be is best to have some fancy options in fstab for mounting.
But anyway I'm sure that noatime was on: 
reiser4 		defaults,noatime,nodiratime        0       0

Then it's something else.
BTW, nodiratime is unnecessary when you use noatime, it's a subset of it.
I can't reproduce it, but I use GMOME :)
Try to time sync sometimes, and see what happens.

Ok, I will do that, but before I have to format again with reiser4, then I 
will try also the netbeans solution.
I put reiser 3.6 again because I need to use netbeans for my work.

You shouldn't play around with your work like that :)
Maybe leave /home on reiserfs or ext3. Use reiserfs if you have
dominant smaller files, and ext3 if you have a lot larger files
(videos, music etc.)
They have their quirks too, but I think that they have a very larger
users base, so if anything bad can happen (except power failure or
murphy) you should be safe.

Hi, I like to use only one fs if it is possible, I found that reiserfs is good 
even for big files, like 4 Gb files or more (even if they unbalance the tree 
with BLOB problems). Do you think that reiser4 is not so mature that I can 
trust it for my work?
I always trusted reiser creatures and until now nothing bad happened even many 
years ago with a lap top that was freezing continually (expecially during 
kernel compilation)  due to cpu over heating (acer one), it was 2000 or 2001 
with reiserfs not even included in kernel. 
Anyway I always do PING backup of reiserfs partitions before trying something 
and every night i tar my projetcs just eventually...who knows.
I have ups and my pc has high quality hardware.

So don't be afraid :-)

This looks like broken console settings not related to reiser4.
Something similar can happen after trying to read a file which
contains unreadable symbols..

If system freezes look annoying for you, then I can send an experimental
patch against them.

As per fsync-bound application freezes: there is no any instant remedy
for now except disabling reiser4-specific fsync. Such solution requires
an UPS (unpopular option).

Hi Edward, Thanks for the reply.
My console is usually working, I had this problems only after converting my 
partitions to reiser4 this was the reason why I was thinking it was a reiser4 
related problem, anyway may be you are right.
I'm a risky man but I think I will wait that your patch will be put in your 
official reiser4 patch release. I use this pc for work...so best not play too 
much with fate :-)
May be is best to disable fsync, my pc has UPS.
