Hi,

I've seen many patches about randr so I decided to give it another try.

I've hotplugged a VGA monitor on my laptop and it detected all
resolutions but the native one. I was able to move either screen on the
left or on the right. Gnome was trying its best to place its panels on
the bottom-right most corners.

The only two issues are this native resolution not detected, and Gnome
not placing the panels where I expected. I was used to the intel driver
placing them on the main screen, and leaving the extra screen empty.

Yet I was very happy and I wanted to share my joy!

This is a 8400M GS with the master branch of nouveau and drm.

Regards,

Hervé

Maybe share a xorg log and your xorg.conf, so we can know what kind of
problem it is (that's causing your native res not to show up).

Maarten.

The xorg logs: http://pastebin.ca/1203355
The xorg.conf: http://pastebin.ca/1203356

Don't pay attention to the "EXAOptimizeMigration" option, I've just
added it to try at next reboot.

The VGA-1 is a 1600x1200 LCD, a real 4/3 not a widescreen.

The LVDS-0 is my 1280x800 laptop panel.

Thanks for taking care,

Hervé

Is this log of the attempt to connect the vga, as i cannot find it in the log?

I can say now that you should remove these lines:

HorizSync 28.0-64.0
VertRefresh 43.0-60.0

Unless you are very sure you need them, otherwise they limit the modes
that are accepted.

btw, KMS is autodetected, the option doesn't exist anymore.

Maarten.

I've removed these lines and play again with xrandr this morning.

A new xorg log: http://pastebin.ca/1204094

I also took a picture of the desktop combining the 1280x1024 screen on
the left and the 1280x800 one on the right:

I really can't see anything related to the vga being connected in the
log, so that makes it hard to know what is wrong.

Maarten.
