How to set a different resolution?

I just gave nouveau a try and was surprised that it just works out of 
the box on Mandriva. Great work!

However, I'm not sure how to set up a different resolution properly.

With the closed nvidia driver, I usually just click on krandrtray in KDE 
and pick a different resolution.

With nouveau driver, though, it works as well, but only partially.

I can see the resolution is theoretically changed (fonts, windows are 
bigger when I change from 1280x1024 to 1024x768), but technically, in my 
LCD monitor info I can see the resolution is still 1280x1024. Why?

Because of this issue, I can't use my beamer (dual-head), which only 
supports resolutions up to 1024x768.

Type "xrandr" to list the available resolutions. Then xrandr -s [the
number of my favourite resolution in the list].

"xrandr -s 1024x768" sets the resolution to 1024x768, but LCD display 
still shows 1280x1024 when I press its "Show info" button. Beamer 
doesn't work in that resolution.

Also, I can see black stripes (1 cm or so on a 19 inch LCD) below and 
above the image, where I can't move the mouse.

I think the problem lies somewhere else.

Tomasz,

It sounds to me like what may be happening is the video card is doing the 
scaling instead of the monitor.  This is evidenced by the fact that the 
resolution does change, but the LCD still sees the native resolution coming 
in. This shouldn't affect dual head, however.

I'm not sure how to change this. It's also possible your monitor needs this. 
This should, however, give you a starting point on where to look for how to 
correct this.

"fullscreen", the default however (iirc) is "aspect" scaling which may
leave top or bottom bars (but not both).

To tell the graphics card not to scale, and leave it to the monitor,
you'll want to run the following command:

xrandr --output DVI-I-0 --set SCALING_MODE panel

(replace DVI-I-0 with your actual output name - run xrandr with no
options if you're not sure)

That will cause the card to output the actual resolution you requested,
instead of scaling it to your monitor native resolution.

I'm not sure if there is some way to set this as the default, perhaps an
option in the xorg.conf?

From the manpage:

       Option "ScalingMode" "string"
              Only for the randr-1.2 driver, this allows to set the
DFP scaling mode.  The options are "fullscreen", "aspect",
              "noscale" and "panel". Default: "aspect".
