Does your own system matter

	  Does your own system play important part when building stuff with OpenEmbedded? I am building on Ubuntu 8.10 and I do seem to be getting failed builds where other people do not judging on build statuses they report.

I am trying to build for DNS-323 using angstrom-2008.1 distro in stable/2009 branch now. I have tried other branches, stable and dev, earlier too. Building always breaks at uclibc.

I was able to compile uclibc 0.9.29 for cm-x270, though. Unfortunately that build failed later on also.

Before complaining about broken stuff I'd like to get my own end sorted out.

Hi,
please provide a log of the failed action. Otherwise we can only guess.

Btw: Have you checked that /bin/sh is /bin/bash on your box?

Hi,

I did not provide logs as my question was deliberately on more general level still as I wanted to know if there are some system setups what to avoid etc. In the wiki page for stable/2009 (http://wiki.openembedded.net/index.php/Stable) it is mentioned that support for Ubuntu 8.10 is in TODO-list.

I wanted to know what system setups people are using successfully. I take it that Ubuntu 8.10 is a bad choice at the moment. How about Ubuntu 7.10 or 7.04?

Ubuntu 8.10 (amd64) is not working properly.

I'm testnig now with 9.04 (beta)

Do you mean 32 or 64bit Ubuntu? That is, I have 32-bit ubuntu running on amd64.

Just a note: I routinely run OE inside a chroot environment,
and sometimes a 32-bit chroot on a 64-bit kernel.
Of course this works only with the correct personality (setarch).

That sounds reassuring. Are you building uclibc at all? Also,
does it matter what versions of gcc and g++ packages you have
installed locally? I am using what ever is the latests, 4.x.

I have 32-bit Ubuntu 8.10 running on amd64.

I'm building uclibc-based devices (AVR32 and ARMv5TEJ) on Debian 
Etch (Office) and Debian Unstable (home).

The frozen one uses uclibc 0.9.28, the other currently 0.9.30.1.


However, my devices aren't general usable PDA-like devices, so I 
use a very selected set of packages (lots hand-craftet BBFILES 
+= ..., this also gives nice bitbake-parse times). And I'm not 
using Angstrom as distribution, but have something different 
(e.g. centered around unionfs/aufs to minimize flash-wearout).

One device uses a frozen org.openembedded.dev version and is VERY 
tiny, just 33 *.bb files, the other device is currently on the 
development branch of OpenEmbedded, as development for that 
device hasn't yet finished.




As a side note, I don't build all -native packages and instead 
have this in my config:

I've not build uclibc for some time. Will try again to build a current
image for a AVR32-based NGW when I at that machine.

Here's another one using Ubuntu 8.10. Currently building basic bootstrap 
images with and w/o X, distro is angstrom, branch is org.openembedded.dev, all  
glibc. The stable branches bumped out very early (think it was the shasum 
package), so I stayed with org.openembedded.dev.

So far, two patches were needed (gcc-cross-kernel and kernel). I also had one 
issue with intltool:

| checking for XML::Parser... configure: error: XML::Parser perl module is 
required for intltool
| FATAL: oe_runconf failed
NOTE: Task failed: /home/jb/devel/cc/jammsession/oe/build/tmp/work/i586-
angstrom-linux/intltool-0.40.3-r2/temp/log.do_configure.21467
NOTE: package intltool-0.40.3-r2: task do_configure: failed

and fixed this by running:
bitbake libxml-parser-perl-native

Hope that gets you further down the road ...

using newer distributions to compile old compilers will often cause trouble because
new distributions have recent gcc versions. e.g. if you compile gcc 3.4 with gcc 4.x you will end up
in some compilation issues. It is generally preferred that you use gcc 3.4 or less to compile gcc 3.4

I think you should add DEPENDS for libxml-parser-perl in intltool recipe and retry. Depending on native package may
not be required.
