i finally got the asus xonar d1 and installed the latest kernel from
the backports for debian lenny and the card doesnt work at all and has
unbelievably less controls in the mixer, so my guess is that the driver
is ok, but alsa can not operate it. i am keeping on trying. i am about
to download fedora 13 beta to test it there, maybe it helps.

while the download is runing i am continuing to try and look what could
be the problem.

ah, the card is working, however the mixer controls are too less, i
dont think thats OK, maybe i am right w/ the operating of the driver.

THE CARD IS WORKING

so i call it back. the problem was, that in the manual they have mixed
it up where the output is and so on... they are other way round as in
the manual... so i fond out while testing other connectors.

What controls are missing?

The D1/DX hardware doesn't have that many controls because there
aren't so many inputs or outputs.

There is one "Master" control with 8 channels. How this is displayed
is up to the mixer application. (alsamixer isn't ideal in this respect,
older versions even less so.)

Yes, the driver now doesn't write registers that have not changed.
In theory, this shouldn't make too much of a difference unless the
mixer tries to set the same volume repeatedly.

The D2(X) has an analog loopback path, digital inputs with loopback
and monitoring, MIDI input/output, and, no outputs but most important,
lots of colorful LEDs.

Slightly higher; this doesn't matter in practice.

Some people need digital inputs or MIDI.

And the lights are useful to keep the jacks apart on badly lit LAN
parties (according to Asus' marketing), or to part casemodders from
their money (not an official Asus statement).

Mostly reverse engineering. C-Media gives out the register datasheet
only under NDA. I never signed that NDA.
