Hi folks,

I recently purchased a TL-WN422G v2, planning on using it as an AP.
Sadly, I found your docs after the purchase, indicating that the device
and/or its driver (ath9k_htc) don't support AP/master mode. Is this
something that's being worked on, or is the hardware incapable of
handling master mode? If it does get master mode, what hackery will be
required to make it work with hostapd? Thanks for your help.

Yes, currently, ath9k_htc doesn't support AP mode.
The HW is capable of operating in AP mode, the driver
lacks the needed code support. Nobody is currently working
on this, but it might change in the future. :)

The TP-LINK TLWN422G I recently purchased from Newegg was $11 with free
shipping:

I've been able to get the adapter recognized under Ubuntu 10.04 with a
very recent ath9k_htc driver (from the tarball released on 6/5), and I
can get it to connect to my old Dlink AP in managed mode. I was hoping
to replace the Dlink with this guy, and will be happy to be a tester for
any code you can produce, Pat. Hope this helps.
