It is a VM on qemu-kvm, 2GB RAM, 1 Virtual CPU,
Root filesystem is a copy-on-write AUFS, changes are written via NFS.
This machine runs always into this error on startup, after installing
Fedora 389 directory server.
We have seen this error also when memory was low, but this VM has plenty
memory free.

At first blush, it looks like the guest's VM subsystem is asking the NFS client to write back a clean page. Could be a misbehavior in AUFS? When memory is low, the VM is more likely to drive writebacks, so that could make this error occur more frequently. Is this the reason? No. As Chuck said, the bug is that something is calling the writeback code on clean unstable pages. Normally, an nfs writeback page will go through 3 states: 1) Dirty page - needs writeback 2) clean unstable page (needs a call to commit) 3) clean page - all done... while it is acceptable to redirty a clean unstable page, it needs to be done with care, and so the NFS code will actually check in nfs_try_to_update_request() whether or not the page is in the clean unstable state; if so it will take action to deal with that. IOW: If you are seeing this all the time with aufs (but not ordinary NFS mounts), then my guess is that aufs is doing something weird that circumvents the above checks.
