Then, of course, it fails.

What is your host clocksource?  Does your machine have unstable TSC?  
Here, I have unstable tsc:

[zamsden@mysore linux-2.6]$ cat 
/sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/*
hpet acpi_pm
hpet

Can you do this in the guest too?  That will make it very clear what 
clocksources the guest finds during bootup.
