Is there a guide which informationen such a message should contain in which format?

Can git prepare a summary for it (i just branched from 2011.03-maintenance and cherry-picked some commits from master)?

I tend to use this one:

Most commits are hipox machine specific kernel config modifications or kernel code fixes.

One commit enables building kernel 2.6.24 with newer GNU make.

Another one backports support for AMIC flashes.
