I am not sure how SNDRV_MINOR_HWDEPS is used further but:
else if (device < SNDRV_MINOR_HWDEPS)
device++;
else
device = SNDRV_MINOR_HWDEPS;
that cuts the corner case device = SNDRV_MINOR_HWDEPS.
