Hi! My name is Walter Keeler, and I've been working with the Debian Linux
for Sparc CD set for about two weeks now.
I have Linux up and running on a Sparc 5 at home, which will be my DSL
gateway/firewall once I get DSL installed a week from now. I've been
trying to get Linux running on an Ultra 5 at work, with considerably less
success.
First off, during the installation process, I can set aside a swap
partition, but when I try to format it as swap, the process fails. The VC
with system messages indicates inability to read a swap filesystem
signature in the swap partition, but I have no clue how to create such a
signature.
Secondly, Linux is in place, X won't run. Whether I run startx or Xsun
directly, I get a blank screen with a line cursor in the upper right-hand
corner; I can switch VC's, and when I come back, the server has died with
two messages, the first saying X should be up on VC 7, the second a
segmentation fault.
I thought compiling a new kernel might help, so I got 2.2.9 source off the
net; however, when I tried to make vmlinux, the compilation dies right
away with sparc64-linux-gcc - no such file.
I found a sparc 64 RPM on the net, used Debian's alien package to convert
it to .deb and installed it; however, it seemed to need glibc 2.1, and
Debian installed 2.0. Attempting to upgrade the glibc to 2.1 resulted in
predictable havoc (all gettys died during the next reboot, trying to find
2.0 symbols and failing), so I'm pretty much stuck for the moment.
Once I get to feeling more ambitious, I'll probably take a stab at
installing the next, unstable Debian release (potato) over the net off the
boot CD I have with slink (current stable Debian). I'd do without a boot
CD at all, except that setting up a RARP server is such a pain.
This is sorta fun!

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself if I may.
My name is Joseph Hart. I work at ATR ISD Labs in Kyoto as a programmer
and research assistant to Dr. Tom Ray on the ALife program Tierra, with which
some of you may be familiar. I have been a programmer for about thirty years,
and have worked with the Tierra project for about the last seven years. I
finally moved to Kyoto five years ago to avoid commuting from Niagara Falls
NY....:-)
We are currently engaged in research using the network model of Tierra. My
responsibilities include making upgrades and bug fixes to the Tierra code,
maintaining and monitoring the Tierra network, sampling the "organisms" which
"live" on it, and providing analyses of these.
When another department at ATR finished operations recently, they discarded
much of their equipment, and I thereby came into possession of what appears to
be a perfectly functional Indigo2 Impact 10000. The hard drive seems to have
been formatted, so I do not have IRIX for it. I would like to be able to set up
Linux on it if that is possible, hence my interest in your project. I
understand that there is quite a lot of work to be done to get Linux running on
this machine, so since I have one, may I be of any assistance ?
With Thanks,
J. Hart

Hi all. :) I'd like to introduce myself, if I may.
My name's Tim, and I'm in Berlin at the moment. I
recently picked up an Indigo2 R10000 SI, which is a
very nice purple. I can't really knock Irix, but I
don't have the source, and I don't have a compiler,
which is like a car with no seats where you can't
open the hood. Besides, I've always wanted to have
a good reason to hack around on the Linux kernel a
bit.
So, here I am. :)
I'm going to spend the next week or two getting my
bearings on what's been done, and what's waiting to
be done. Then, if I'm not completely out of my depth,
maybe I can help with some stuff.
One thing that's somewhat unfortunate is that it seems
SGI still hasn't released any documentation for the
Impact graphics hardware. Is there any word on that?
Well, pleased to meet you all. Have fun.
-Tim

hello there,
i am keen to do a little bit of kernel programming, but i don't really
know where to start... i have programmed in c for a few years now in
mostly numerical stuff, and i think i could write a device driver if i
really needed to, what would some people reccomend reading before
starting?... i'd be keen to have a pet project of maybe totally
replacing an essential component (just as practice not to make it better
or anything!)
also, my kernel always says "Unknown Bridge Resource 2: Assuming
Transparent" on bootup, why would it be doing this? I have accounted for
everything on my system in the compile
thanks in advance!

Well why don't you find out what this means and what you could do about
it ? An excellent starting point, no ?
Anyway, visit http://kernelnewbies.org/ which amongst other things has a

It seems you're missing the curses library :
http://www.gnu.org/software/ncurses/ncurses.html
You don't need 2.6 to test epoll though :

I think the kernel should be able to support more than 4GB of RAM on
machines that can support it.
(ie. 64bit machines, or maybe machines with PAE enabled)
What changes did you make?

If you haven't already got them, it's a good idea to purchase the
LDD3, LKD 3 (which I think should be published by now) and UTLK3
books.

Hi everyone,
I'm attending Hacker School and was interested in contributing to git
this summer and possibly afterwards. At Hacker School they encourage
us to contribute to open source software and projects were are
interested in. I'm in love with git, so naturally I want to contribute
to you guys. Why git? Because it's an awesome tool that has many well
thought out features that other source control tools lack like offline
mode. I'd like to see more people using git, and I'd like to see it
chosen as the source control tool used for team projects. So I was
thinking about contributing the following (which are the reasons I've
heard why people don't use git):
1) Commands are cryptic: I was thinking I could provide a wrapper to
simplify the commands, for example to undo a local commit, I can
introduce a "git undo commit", that wraps "reset" and will undo the
last commit. Or maybe "git rollback" is a better name?
2) git undo command, that will undo the last command (if possible)?
Other ideas:
3) Just like we have git-svn, maybe a svn-git?
Any help or if you can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate
it. I can also start out by fixing some bugs to get into it. I
couldn't figure out how to see a list of bugs though.
How does one contribute to your documentation? Would it be submitting
a patch just like with code?
Please let me know what you think!
Thanks,
Leila

I would absolutely love "gvn" command that works more or less exactly
like svn, but works against a git repository instead. That might allow
me to persuade the last recalcitrant bugger to switch to a version
control that actually allows people to work *with* the tool instead of
*for* it.

Hi everyone,
I’m Samiksha (a.k.a. Shdwcodr), an undergrad BCA student from India with a
relentless drive to get deep into the Linux kernel. I've recently begun my
journey contributing to the kernel, focusing on staging drivers, learning
the kernel development workflow, and understanding the culture of patch
submission and review.
Over the past few days, I’ve:
- Set up a local kernel build and testing workflow.
- Sent out my first real patch (not a dummy), with more lined up.
- Subscribed to key mailing lists and joined IRC channels to stay in the
loop.
- Started tracking patch feedback and diving into `scripts/checkpatch.pl`,
git send-email, and the entire mailing list-based workflow.
My short-term goal is to get multiple patches accepted into staging by
early 2025, and long-term I’m aiming for the **LFX Kernel Mentorship
Program in 2026**.
I’ll be lurking, learning, and asking questions when stuck. Thanks in
advance to everyone who shares knowledge and guidance — it means a lot to
newcomers like me.
Looking forward to learning from you all and giving back as I grow.
Cheers,
Samiksha (Shdwcodr)

Hi everyone,
I’m Samiksha (a.k.a. Shdwcodr), an undergrad BCA student from India
with a relentless drive to get deep into the Linux kernel. I've
recently begun my journey contributing to the kernel, focusing on
staging drivers, learning the kernel development workflow, and
understanding the culture of patch submission and review.
Over the past few days, I’ve:
- Set up a local kernel build and testing workflow.
- Sent out my first real patch (not a dummy), with more lined up.
- Subscribed to key mailing lists and joined IRC channels to stay in the loop.
- Started tracking patch feedback and diving into
`scripts/checkpatch.pl`, git send-email, and the entire mailing
list-based workflow.
My short-term goal is to get multiple patches accepted into staging by
early 2025, and long-term I’m aiming for the **LFX Kernel Mentorship
Program in 2026**.
I’ll be lurking, learning, and asking questions when stuck. Thanks in
advance to everyone who shares knowledge and guidance — it means a lot
to newcomers like me.
Looking forward to learning from you all and giving back as I grow.
Cheers,
Samiksha (Shdwcodr)
