[Xenomai] Next Xenomai Release?

Hello Fellow Xenomai Developers/Users,

I've have be following the development of Xenomai over the last few months on this mailing list and have noticed a lot of good features being added and bugs being fixed since the last 2.6.2.1 release. So, my question is when is the next stable version of Xenomai going to be released?  I'm particularly interested in the Bealgebone 3.8 kernel patch since this is the hardware I'm working with.  I have read the post regarding the Raspberry Pi/Beaglebone I-pipe patches, but I it was unclear to me how they were to be applied and to what code base they were to be applied to.

If someone could clarify to me how to use the patches in there current state (if they are stable enough), that would be great. Otherwise, I could wait until the next official release, that I presume would have the RaspberryPi/Beaglebone 3.8.x kernel patches.

I guess I overlooked that post and response. Any clarifying words/steps on
what needs to be done to get the 3.8.x kernel patched with Xenomai for
running on the Beaglebone/Raspberry Pi in the meantime?

For beaglebone, it is integrated in the I-pipe tree for the ARM
architecture (git://git.xenomai.org/ipipe-gch.git, branch for-core-3.8),
which is currently based on 3.8.0 but will probably be rebased on a more
recent version for the I-pipe 3.8 release, for the raspberry pi, you can
try the patch which has been posted by Paul, but probably needs rebasing
once the I-pipe for 3.8 is released.

Adding support for a v3.8.x kernel appears to be not really
attractive, given that v3.8 has already reached EOL...

What happened, Canonical decided not to continue the maintenance of the
3.8 kernel since that announce?

I have a set of patches ready for 3.8.8 based on the "official" 
Raspberry Pi sources [1] - Need to reduce the current set of nine down 
to a pre and post pair which I'll try to do over the weekend. In the 
meantime, if anyone wants to take the set for a spin, drop me a note 
and I'll send them over.

In the meantime, I'm tracking BCM2835 integration in to the mainline 
kernel with view to working on 3.10.y - Realistically, I don't think 
support in 3.10.y will be complete by the time it is released, so we 
may have to wait for 3.12.y.

Hmm, this doesn't sound very good for Beaglebone users. As Gilles has
mentioned in and earlier post, Beaglebone users could use his I-pipe tree
for ARM, which is currently based on 3.8.0. But, if the v3.8 kernel has
reached EOL like Wolfgang brought to our attention, does that mean Xenomai
development on v3.8 stops as well?  I don't know when TI or
Beagleboard.org will release as BSP with a more up-to-date, non-EOL
kernel, so we might be stuck with the v3.8 for awhile.

But I also said this is not the patch that would be released. Actually
the Beaglebone situation is far better than the Pi situation, because
they can already use the mainline kernel.

Except exceptions (like the 3.8 kernel which Canonical has said they
would maintain, like I posted in an answer to Wolfgang you seem to have
missed), every kernel until october will be EOLed when the next kernel
is out, from what I understood.

The ipipe-gch repository is not yet the final I-pipe.

Every stable kernel until october 2013 will be EOLed when the next
kernel is out.

So, any other kernel than 3.0 and 3.4 is not "attractive" until october
2013.

As it turns out however, 3.8 is a bit less unattractive than the others,
because Canonical seem to have announced they would be maintaining it
for a while longer (until August 2014, it seems) in the following post:

I have no information about Canonical's plans.  But this is a vendor
tree after all, not an "official" stable kernel tree, as that should
be hosted at kernel.org, then.

Yes, probably.  The whole situation with LTS trees is IMO deeply
dissatisfactory, as it is not possible to plan anything in advance.
This has been discussed a couple of times before, but Greg Kroah-
Hartman refuses to provide any information in advance; he repeatedly
stated that a LTS kernel will be declared as such only after the
release; appearently after sufficent testing by a large number of
users has verified that there anre not too many serious issues in it.

Yes, indeed - but I wonder where this will lead to.  Now we have
"official" stable kernel trees, and in addition vendor specific stable
trees - this doesn't really scale to me.  If Canonical is willing to
support 3.8 longer, they should take over the stable tree on
kernel.org from Greg Kroah-Hartman.  But this is off topic here...

In any case, the whole situation is a mess.

Indeed. On x86, the only currently available I-pipe alternative to 3.8
is 3.5. And that one is in EOL for an even longer time now.

We will move on to 3.9 or 3.10 soon, but most probably not soon enough
for the next Xenomai release.

Which makes sense after all. I am afraid the people who are not
maintaining the stable trees are not in position to demand anything.

Hi Paul,

I have at last pushed the final version of the I-pipe patch for Linux
3.8.13, it is available both in the xenomai git as a patch and in the
I-pipe git.

Could you rebase the pre- and post- patches for Raspberry so that I can
put them in the Xenomai sources too?

Also note that the I-pipe patch for 3.10.0 is available, but it is
probably not yet the final version.

Looks like BCM2835 support is making its way in to the mainline kernel, 
so I'll also take a look at 3.10.y and report back.

Attached, two patches. Instructions for use:

1) Checkout kernel sources from git://github.com/raspberrypi/linux.git 
and use the rpi-3.8.y branch - d996a1b is the SHA-1 hash used, but 
later revisions should work.
2) Apply ipipe-core-3.8.13-raspberry-pre.patch
3) Apply ipipe-core-3.8.13-arm patch
4) Apply ipipe-core-3.8.13-raspberry-post.patch
