Hi,
This patchset updates the Malta defconfigs and adds a new
one for SMVP/EVA.
Therefore, it needs to be applied after the EVA patchset.
The patchset is based on top of the upstream-sfr/mips-for-linux-next tree
Markos Chandras (2):
MIPS: Malta: Enable DEVTMPFS
MIPS: Add defconfig for Malta SMVP with EVA
Paul Burton (3):
MIPS: regenerate malta defconfigs
MIPS: Set page size to 16KB for malta SMP defconfigs
MIPS: Default NR_CPUS=8 for malta SMP defconfigs

This patch simply regenerates the malta defconfigs such that they don't
change after being used & saved as a defconfig again. ie. it is the
result of running the following:
for cfg in arch/mips/configs/malta*; do
ARCH=mips make `basename ${cfg}`
ARCH=mips make savedefconfig
mv -v defconfig ${cfg}
done

For Malta defconfigs which may run on an SMP configuration without
hardware cache anti-aliasing, a 16KB page size is a safer default.
Most notably at the moment it will avoid cache aliasing issues for
multicore proAptiv systems.

You're aware that this may cause binary compatibility issues with old
userland? So far the defaults were chosen to maximise compatibility
over performance.

Hi Ralf,
Are you referring to programs hard coding the page size to 4k instead of
using the getpagesize()? Well yes this could be a problem. But is that a
real problem? We are changing the default value so whoever has such an
old userland can easily switch to the 4k page size. It may also be a
good opportunity to expose such application and get the fixed properly
:) But if that's not acceptable, we can drop the patch. Paul what do you
think?

I think the potential backwards compatibility issue is probably not a
huge issue for Malta, but that it would make sense to dig deeper into
why proAptiv SMP systems don't run correctly with 4KB pages. You don't
actually have to look very far to find userland which depends upon 4KB
pages (*cough* android *cough*). I consider this patch an acceptable
workaround for the proAptiv problem on Malta, but I don't know enough
at the moment to say whether there's a proper fix.

The issue I was refering to is that certain older binutils are creating
ELF segments of insufficient alignment for large page sizes to work.
Hardcoded page size is another problem - one should think that after
iterating through every power of two starting with like 512 bytes
programmers have sprung a clue.

Not so long ago there was an issue with Debian where Iceweasel or
Spidermonkey failed on MIPS/Loongson because of its 8K page size (the
userspace assumed 4K). You will get such issues as long as x86 dominates,
it's not a matter of "old userland".

It is not just getpagesize(). People also used to amuse themselves by
patching ld so that it did Program Header layout in a manner that was
incompatible with anything other than 4K pages. This was mostly seen in
toolchains used by people using uClibc.

In Debian I am aware of the problem on at least all mozilla based
products (the problem is jemalloc) and GCL.
The problem is not that the page size is hardcoded to 4K, but that it is
detected at build time instead of run time. This is only a problem for
distributions where a package could be built on one machine and run on
another, but it should not affect people building such packages
themselves, or using the same set of machines.
The fact that the page size is not 4K is usually correctly handled, as
other architectures like alpha and itanium were using 8K or 16K pages.

Of course that is incorrect, pagesize must be detected at runtime. Any
package that does otherwise is defective and should be fixed.
If they need an upper bound, we can supply that. It is 64K.

* [PATCH 4/5] MIPS: Default NR_CPUS=8 for malta SMP defconfigs

The previous NR_CPUS=2 default is not an optimal default for current
Malta setups where it is common to have more than 2 CPUs available. It
makes sense to increase this to a number which covers all common setups
currently in use, such that all of those cores are usable. 8 seems to
fit that description.
If the user has less than 8 CPUs & they wish to have a more optimal
kernel they can simply reduce this in their config. It makes sense for
the default to work on as many systems as possible.
