It seems that the no-sound bug is caused with the AC'97 codec
initialization. Specifying 96000 as ac97_clock parameter won't help,
because this value must be from 8000 to 48000 otherwise it is ignored.
Please, fill a bug to our bugtrack system.

I guess your problem has nothing to do with ac97_clock.  Setting
ac97_clock=96000 is simply wrong.  If this really works, then something
else is broken...

I see this problem on Ubuntu also. My motherboard has onboard sound;
lspci says:

0000:00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II]
(rev 78)

it works fine with ubuntu's linux-image-2.6.8.1-3-386 but not with
any of
linux-image-2.6.10-5-386, linux-image-2.6.10-5-686, nor
linux-image-2.6.10-5-k7

Is it ordinary for a bug to remain in "new" state this long? Anything I
can do to help?
