There is no module option for spdif.
You just need to specify the correct PCM name "iec958" or "spdif".

You seem to be confused.

On ALSA, you need to access to the certain PCM for accessing
the SPDIF properly, for example,

    % aplay -Diec958 foo.wav

You don't need to touch 'IEC958*' stuff on the mixer in general.

Indeed, the command you suggested played some wav files of mine on the
SPDIF.

Though two problems:

1) aplay played the wav files at four times their speed (probably didn't
use the right frequency)

2) i dont use aplay, i want to use XMMS, Gaim, and loads of other
applications
and games. How am i going to make them play over SPDIF when only aplay
has
this special option???

I need something system-wide that will play everything on the SPDIF, not
just aplay.

Thank you for you patience so far with my questions :]

use the right frequency)

2) i dont use aplay, i want to use XMMS, Gaim, and loads of other
applications
and games. How am i going to make them play over SPDIF when only aplay
has
this special option???

I need something system-wide that will play everything on the SPDIF, not
just aplay.

Thank you for you patience so far with my questions :]

The SPDIF out has likely the fixed rate 48k, thus needs sample rate
conversion.
Try to play via 'plug:iec958' to do SRC.

You can specify the output PCM name explicitly with XMMS ALSA plugin.
If the games use SDL, you can run them over ALSA native mode by
configuring via the enviornment variable. I forgot the detail now...

Alternatively, you can use the ALSA OSS emulation library, if the apps
don't support ALSA natively.
