Summary: Master volume only controls front output (emu10k1)
Description:
Setting the alsamixer Master Volume slider only controls the front two
speakers. The rear speakers have to be controlled with the Wave Surround
setting. I'm not sure whether this is an alsamixer bug or a alsa-driver
bug. If I'm wrong putting it here, sorry.

It would be very convenient to be able to control all four speakers with
the Master Volume setting and to have a Front and Rear slider to control
the front and rear speakers individually.

Audigy is OK - this was fixed in past.

SB Live is worse, because there is not one signal path from analog inputs
to front speakers, but two (audigy has only one).

If you are interested in fixing this, I can send you how SB Live alsa
mixer looks now and how it should look after.

This will fix - partially "master" control (this bug repport), spdif
volume controls (for digital speakers) (another bug report) and signal
distortion when using bass and treble controls (another bug report).

Yes, please send me this info, and I'll try to fix the driver.

With master_volume_v3.patch there's now an extra Volumen Control called
"Master Digital". That's useless since I still have to use Wave Sourround
to control PCM Rear Volume. Changing "PCM" has no effect.
Also there's still no Line/Midi output on rear :(

Summary: Master volume only controls front output (emu10k1)
Description:
Setting the alsamixer Master Volume slider only controls the front two
speakers. The rear speakers have to be controlled with the Wave Surround
setting. I'm not sure whether this is an alsamixer bug or a alsa-driver
bug. If I'm wrong putting it here, sorry.

It would be very convenient to be able to control all four speakers with
the Master Volume setting and to have a Front and Rear slider to control
the front and rear speakers individually.

I have just tested this new patch - and it works great :)
I'm amazed that it didn't take more than those few lines - my thanks to
Christian Haertwig and you muffty for posting it here.

About the lower overall volume reported by some, it doesn't seem to be a
problem on this system. The main PCM and Master levels are the same, but
the Surround, Center, and LFE levels appears lower. Actually, those
channels were a bit high before the pacth. I had to have PCM, Surround,
Center, LFE at levels 70, 30, 30, 30 to get the volumes even. Now it seems
that the levels have been even out, and I get the same amount of sound
when they are set the same (e.g. 70 on those channels)

I just used the patch as-is (didn't change the 44/46 value in the patch),
and it's a SB Live! 5.1 (SB0060)

OK, then please someone submit the right patch to alsa-devel ML, not URL.
Discussing/reviewing the patch on a web form is very annoying.

Thanks.

I posted this on bug #172 by mistake, so I'll move the original post here:

After a long discussion in alsa-user@lists.sourceforge.net about this
problem a member of the list (Christian Haertwig) send me a patch to the
emu10k1 driver that adds a volume control called 'Digital Master' and is

After a suggestion from Lee Revell I played arround with the

OK, then please someone submit the right patch to alsa-devel ML, not URL.
Discussing/reviewing the patch on a web form is very annoying.

Thanks.

I'd suggest to rename the ac97 Master to Front, and the new Master Digital
to a real Master. Also, for avoid regressions (no sound after update),
make the default value of Front full and unmuted.

I posted this on bug #172 by mistake, so I'll move the original post here:

After a long discussion in alsa-user@lists.sourceforge.net about this
problem a member of the list (Christian Haertwig) send me a patch to the
emu10k1 driver that adds a volume control called 'Digital Master' and is
able to control all 6 channels of the card.
This is a part of the mail he send to me:
---------------------
A "good" (where good means pretty easy to realize) fix *is*
available. I have attached the patch file that does the job. You need to
recompile alsa drivers that for. with the Patch included you will have a
new

Thanks again to whoever has send that patch to me.
---------------------
I tested the patch and it appeard that it doesn't work for me.
When playing 2-channel sound my left front speaker was muted and when
playing 6-channel sound the rear left speaker was muted.
After a suggestion from Lee Revell I played arround with the
SND_EMU10K1_GPR_CONTROLS and made it work when leaving this setting to 44
and not changing it to 46 as the patch did. After these changes everything
works fine. A new volume called 'Digital Master' can control all channels
of the card. I have tested the card only in analog mode, as I don't have
digital speakers.
If this is working for You give some feedback.
I'm attaching the original patch I was send as accourding to Christian it
works for other people. If it doesn't work for You try changing the
SND_EMU10K1_GPR_CONTROLS as I did.
The original author of the patch is Mikael Magnusson and as I know it is
posted to alsa-devel.
I tested with alsa 1.0.10 and SB Live! 5.1 (SB0220)

I'd suggest to rename the ac97 Master to Front, and the new Master Digital
to a real Master. Also, for avoid regressions (no sound after update),
make the default value of Front full and unmuted.

I wrote this little, dirty workaround-script that works just fine for me.
Anyway I would love to see a really working Master-Slider in a new
alsa-version :)

An improved script based on delmonico's but with function and variable
channel names. PCM volume restriction does not yet work though. I'd
appreciate if someone finds the bug. and thanks to delmonico!

Any news on this one?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's not really a question of "finding the bug", these controls are simply
not implemented yet. As you can see, it does not make sense to further
bloat the drivers by fixing it there.

Since the problem can obviously be solved in userspace, and affects more
than one driver, it seems the fix should be implemented in alsa-lib. All
we need is a way to define new controls and link others to them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 pzad - 01-04-05 21:29
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But something can be fixed in driver (and this bug can be partially fixed
in driver for emu10k1, and this is simpler solution).

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 rlrevell - 01-04-05 21:38
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter,

So the fix for SBLive is to just create an extra control in the driver,
and have it change the values of all the per channel controls? IOW, do
exactly what the alsavol.sh script does, but inside the driver?

I might try to implement this. Does it need to be fixed for SBLive and
Audigy too?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 pzad - 01-04-05 22:30
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Audigy is OK - this was fixed in past.

Yes, please send me this info, and I'll try to fix the driver.

pzad, could you send me this info as well?

Peter Zubaj and Mikael Magnusson have provided me with all the necessary
info to implement a proper master volume for the SBLive. I should have
this working real soon now.

Please check the recent postings for alsa-user and alsa-devel lists before
asking this question. If you read them you would know that yes, it's
being worked on, and no, it's not fixed yet.

If you want to pay me to work on this, please mail me privately.
Otherwise be patient.

 adamk75 - 02-17-05 23:28
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been waiting since early last year. I thought I was being patient
:-)

Anyway, I was only asking because the thread back and forth on alsa-devel
and alsa-user about the problem stopped almost a week ago. Since the
volume levels of alsa-devel and alsa-user are way too high for me, I
figured I'd check up here.

Anyway, the driver has been broken for so long, I can certainly wait a
little longer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 Miwer - 05-20-05 22:02
----------------------------------------------------------------------
adamk75 I agree with you - we've been waiting for this problem to be fixed
for a LONG time now. This has been a problem for at least 18 months now,
according to various forum posts.

rlrevell why is it taking so long? You say that it's beeing worked on, but
that's not what it looks like when reading alsa-user or alsa-devel. You
tell us to be patient, but it's not easy when nothing's happening. I don't
mean to disrespect you, but when you make a statement like "I should have
this working real soon now", then why is this still open after yet another
4 months?

Sorry, I don't have time to work on this. Please bug the ALSA developers

Any news on this one?

Peter,

So the fix for SBLive is to just create an extra control in the driver,
and have it change the values of all the per channel controls? IOW, do
exactly what the alsavol.sh script does, but inside the driver?

I might try to implement this. Does it need to be fixed for SBLive and
Audigy too?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 pzad - 01-04-05 22:30
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Audigy is OK - this was fixed in past.

Please check the recent postings for alsa-user and alsa-devel lists before
asking this question. If you read them you would know that yes, it's
being worked on, and no, it's not fixed yet.

If you want to pay me to work on this, please mail me privately.
Otherwise be patient.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 adamk75 - 02-17-05 23:28
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been waiting since early last year. I thought I was being patient
:-)

Anyway, I was only asking because the thread back and forth on alsa-devel
and alsa-user about the problem stopped almost a week ago. Since the
volume levels of alsa-devel and alsa-user are way too high for me, I
figured I'd check up here.

Anyway, the driver has been broken for so long, I can certainly wait a
little longer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 Miwer - 05-20-05 22:02
----------------------------------------------------------------------
adamk75 I agree with you - we've been waiting for this problem to be fixed
for a LONG time now. This has been a problem for at least 18 months now,
according to various forum posts.

rlrevell why is it taking so long? You say that it's beeing worked on, but
that's not what it looks like when reading alsa-user or alsa-devel. You
tell us to be patient, but it's not easy when nothing's happening. I don't
mean to disrespect you, but when you make a statement like "I should have
this working real soon now", then why is this still open after yet another
4 months?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 rlrevell - 05-20-05 22:05
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry, I don't have time to work on this. Please bug the ALSA developers
to get the abstract mixer layer finished.

Anyway, the driver has been broken for so long, I can certainly wait a
little longer.

adamk75 I agree with you - we've been waiting for this problem to be fixed

rlrevell why is it taking so long? You say that it's beeing worked on, but

Sorry, I don't have time to work on this. Please bug the ALSA developers
to get the abstract mixer layer finished.

Also applies to the intel8x0-driver.

I wrote this little, dirty workaround-script that works just fine for me.
Anyway I would love to see a really working Master-Slider in a new
alsa-version :)

An improved script based on delmonico's but with function and variable
channel names. PCM volume restriction does not yet work though. I'd
appreciate if someone finds the bug. and thanks to delmonico!

Any news on this one?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's not really a question of "finding the bug", these controls are simply
not implemented yet. As you can see, it does not make sense to further
bloat the drivers by fixing it there.

Since the problem can obviously be solved in userspace, and affects more
than one driver, it seems the fix should be implemented in alsa-lib. All
we need is a way to define new controls and link others to them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 pzad - 01-04-05 21:29
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But something can be fixed in driver (and this bug can be partially fixed
in driver for emu10k1, and this is simpler solution).

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 rlrevell - 01-04-05 21:38
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter,

So the fix for SBLive is to just create an extra control in the driver,
and have it change the values of all the per channel controls? IOW, do
exactly what the alsavol.sh script does, but inside the driver?

I might try to implement this. Does it need to be fixed for SBLive and
Audigy too?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 pzad - 01-04-05 22:30
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Audigy is OK - this was fixed in past.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 rlrevell - 01-04-05 22:38
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, please send me this info, and I'll try to fix the driver.

pzad, could you send me this info as well?

pzad, please? :-)

Peter,

So the fix for SBLive is to just create an extra control in the driver,
and have it change the values of all the per channel controls? IOW, do
exactly what the alsavol.sh script does, but inside the driver?

I might try to implement this. Does it need to be fixed for SBLive and
Audigy too?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 pzad - 01-04-05 22:30
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Audigy is OK - this was fixed in past.

SB Live is worse, because there is not one signal path from analog inputs
to front speakers, but two (audigy has only one).

If you are interested in fixing this, I can send you how SB Live alsa
mixer looks now and how it should look after.

This will fix - partially "master" control (this bug repport), spdif
volume controls (for digital speakers) (another bug report) and signal
distortion when using bass and treble controls (another bug report).

bug. If I'm wrong putting it here, sorry.

But something can be fixed in driver (and this bug can be partially fixed
in driver for emu10k1, and this is simpler solution).

Peter,

So the fix for SBLive is to just create an extra control in the driver,
and have it change the values of all the per channel controls? IOW, do
exactly what the alsavol.sh script does, but inside the driver?

I might try to implement this. Does it need to be fixed for SBLive and
Audigy too?

It's not really a question of "finding the bug", these controls are simply
not implemented yet. As you can see, it does not make sense to further
bloat the drivers by fixing it there.

Since the problem can obviously be solved in userspace, and affects more
than one driver, it seems the fix should be implemented in alsa-lib. All
we need is a way to define new controls and link others to them.

An improved script based on delmonico's but with function and variable
channel names. PCM volume restriction does not yet work though. I'd
appreciate if someone finds the bug. and thanks to delmonico!

I wrote this little, dirty workaround-script that works just fine for me.
Anyway I would love to see a really working Master-Slider in a new
alsa-version :)

File uploading didn't work so i'll just post it:

An improved script based on delmonico's but with function and variable
channel names. PCM volume restriction does not yet work though. I'd
appreciate if someone finds the bug. and thanks to delmonico!
