i also wanted to chime in here with another remark [i seem to be unable to create a mantis account [see end of this message]:
Well, not only does dmix not work with cs46xx, but also dsnoop doesn't work correctly when cs46xx is slave. Like someboy else mentioned on this list already, the appl_pointers from the corresponding slave devices don't advance [while the hw pointers do]. Symptom for dsnoop: the first recorded buffer after opening the dsnoop pcm is repeated over and over [this is not surprising if none of the pointers advance]. Symptom for dmix: the first buffer is played back over and over which results in silence when the first period of the playback contains silence..
the alsa pcm ladspa plugin doesn't have this problem btw..

I've attached my .asoundrc just in case. I tested it again today and I

I was trying to debug the dmix issues where bad resampling was done (zeros
were added at the end of the buffer in some cases), so that's why I tried
on this card.
Is there a reason why it doesn't work on this card?
In any case, I've retested with ALSA 1.0.11rc2 (FC5) and the problem still
persists.

Is this a compile time only option? If so, then it is of no use. This is a
legitimate dmix or cs46xx driver bug unless there is a real reason why
this is happening.

But CS46XX_NEW_DSP is not enabled by default
remove your .asoundrc and change CS46XX.conf to use dmix similart to

What is the exact model of your sound card ?

dmix doesn't work with the hardware like CS46xx due to its design. The
cs46xx has no real mmappable DMA unlike others.
The NEW_DSP option is enabled as default now, so dmix will be really
unnecessary unless you explicitly choose to disable that option.
