Hello!
I am new here, and I want to know how to get started, maybe with the
simplest way available.
Regards,
Leonardo

Hey leonardo,
Go through the mailing list, for old mails on the same topic.
Maybe have a look at the eudyptula challenge.

Hello,
There are many ways how to start with the kernel. Try to search
kernelnewbies archive, there are many questions like your.
The good way to start is a join to the Eudyptula Challenge -
http://eudyptula-challenge.org/.
>From myself i can recommed, try to select what you are interested in
the kernel. Kernel is huge. Maybe you're interesting in filesystems or
vfs, network or in any architecture. Select this part and try to
research it.

Hello again,
Only to be sure, do you have to write something special to
little at eudyptula-challenge.org ? Does it take a lot of time? I keep
not receiving anything for almost an hour.

As far as I know, nothing special needed; just something to the effect
of "I'd like to take part in the Eudyptula Challenge."

Unfortunately, this is something that you'll have to get used to; since
the Challenge is run by essentially one man (Little) and a bunch of
scripts, and since there's still, despite those scripts, a heavy amount
of manual work involved on Little's part, wait times can at times be
very long. Case in point, I've been waiting for a response to my
submission to Challenge 6 since mid-January.

Hello Jonathan,
In particular, I am asking about how much time do you have to wait
until you get accepted to join the challenge. If s/he has to approve
each mail address, this will take a lot of time.

Again, it varies. Challenge joins shouldn't take too long, as I imagine
that processing those emails was one of the first jobs that got
automated. If I remember correctly, my registration had a response time
on the order of a couple of hours.
Side note: don't top-post. It's very frowned upon in most mailing
lists. See here: http://kernelnewbies.org/mailinglistguidelines.

It takes a little time for him to get back to you.
Patience is something you'll learn when dealing with the Eudyptula
challenge. :)

Something the others haven't addressed - do you have an understanding of
*why* you are here? As the "how to get started" will be different for
different answers...
Are you here because you're a professional programmer who's done a
lot of userspace work, and your company just re-assigned you to write
an FPGA driver for a new product?
Are you here because you got a project assignment from a professor?
Are you here because you just bought a Brand X laptop and the sound
card is supposedly supported, but it plays everything in reverse?
Are you here because you have a device that has no driver in Linux?
Are you here because you're a troll?
Are you here because you think kernel hacking is a good way to improve
your resume?
Are you here because you've been using Linux, and you want to give back
but have no idea how?
We've seen all of the above here - and each of these should probably
be heading in a different direction. There isn't really a one size
fits all best way to get started.

I am here because I am curious about how the kernel is developed. If I
have to blame to something, that would be taking the LFS101x course. I
have been using some distros since ages, but I never had enough time
to be involved in anything (lots of things to do). I finished
university recently, and I have some free time to do what I like.

Oh, I am sure that I am not a troll (maybe my questions seems to be
about simple topics or vague in some way, but that is because I still
don't know enough to be specific).

This questions seems to be in the direction of my feelings. I am not
sure about which part of the system I would like to be involved with.

I know that, but I wanted something that helps me to have a narrower
set of possible choices. Thanks Valdis!
