Hi group,

Is there a way of getting a list of the devices that grub sees that
can be
boot device??

  In other word: root (hd?,?)

What grub command do I use to get a list?

I am trying to build a configuation that will allow me to boot from a USB
device on a machine that does not "usb boot" in the BIOS.

I'd use a tab completion feature.
Tha means, that you when you press <tab> while typing the name of the
disk, you are provided with list of possibilities. lik "root (hd<tab>: and
so on

Please post questions about GRUB on bug-grub. This list is about the
development of GRUB 2. It's another version than you are using, and
it's a list about development.
