Summary: Volume entirely too faint on 82801g ich7
Description:
I've seen this bug online many times with a resolution of upgrading to alsa
1.0.11, but I upgaded and am still having the issue.
I'm using an hp pavilion dv8000 laptop with built-in altec lansing
speakers.
Windows reports the soundcard as conexant high definition audio, linux as
82801g (ich7). I've tried setting every model I know in the
/etc/modprobe.d/sound file for the hda-intel driver and am still having a
lack of useful volume sliders. The key ones that I need are "pc speaker"
to turn it down cause its way too loud and "external amplifier" to turn up
the laptop's altec lansing speakers (sound volume is decent out of the
headphone jack).
Even with the volume all the way up (both master and pcm) I'm getting
sound thats almost too faint to hear.

It's a conexant codec chip and not properly supported because of lack of
datasheet.

Probably not. It will "eventually" be supported if someone reverse
engineers it, or Conexant provides a datasheet.

No, they don't, and that's no solution anyway - they never integrate
properly with the rest of the system. Realtek tried forking ALSA rather
than just posting a patch to get their hardware working and it failed
miserably.
Ask Conexant for a datasheet. In the meantime get an external USB audio
device.

I don't know, forward them a link to this bug report or something. They
will almost certainly ignore you, but it's worth a try.
You could also bug the laptop vendor about it.

I don't know, forward them a link to this bug report or something. They
will almost certainly ignore you, but it's worth a try.
You could also bug the laptop vendor about it.

mlfarrell - 06-22-06 05:01
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So does the fact that my sound works fine apart from the missing "external
amplifier" mixer control mean that its partially supported? I'm slightly
confused on how the card can perform some tasks well and not others.

There seems to be an OSS driver from Linuxant for this Conexant codec
(14f1):
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/riptide/index.php
There is an interesting point at the feature-list:
1. OSS compatible. We are hoping that somebody with more time can turn
this code into a modern ALSA driver someday..
The licence is BSD-style so someone with experience might use this driver
as a point to start from.
I own a notebook with the 14f1 Codec and the Intel HDA chip, too. So if
someone wants to start some work on it I would be kind of glad. I can
offer some limited time for testing. Since I'm still a little bit confused
with all this different chip-, driver- and codec-stuff and I'm having some
exams in the near future I will not be able to "get into the driver
buisness" soon. But maybe later.
Greetings

Greetings

I wrote teh folks at Linuxant Wednesday and they said it is possible that
they would write an asla driver as well.. in the future.
I guess if the OSS license is BSD, perhaps I know a few clever folks on
the Gentoo dev team that might look at it as well.
I'll try the headphone jack, but I suspect that it will be OK as it is
neither the PC Speaker (man that thing is loud) or the Altec AMP.

Major confusion here:
I downloaded the linuxant installer "cnxinstall.run" file and ran it. It
detected my card, replaced my snd-hda-intel, snd-hda-code modules, and
then they failed to load with massive errors like so:

My kernel source IS set up right for compiling modules, thats how I
installed my nvidia driver. Secondly, the changelog for the driver says
they merged with alsa 1.0.11 final (the alsa version I'm using) which
leads me to believe the update would be futile (still no external
amplifier control).
I guess the best thing to do for me is to wait for the next alsa release
which may be a long way off.

The OSS-driver source can be found at
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/riptide/downloads.php
(Gerneric packages with source)
The ALSA-driver source for the *modem* is under
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads.php
I already tried the "cnxinstall.run" but this installs a driver for the
softmodem (which I don't need as long as I have ADSL ;-) ) but this does
not enable audio-support.

The OSS-driver source can be found at
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/riptide/downloads.php
(Gerneric packages with source)
The ALSA-driver source for the *modem* is under
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads.php
I already tried the "cnxinstall.run" but this installs a driver for the
softmodem (which I don't need as long as I have ADSL ;-) ) but this does
not enable audio-support.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
mlfarrell - 06-24-06 22:28
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On mine, it detects the softmodem (no riptide), but apparently the modem
and sound controller are one and the same. When the installation is done,
it moves the snd-hda-intel.ko and snd-hda-codec.ko in /lib/modules/`uname
-r`/kernel/sound/pci/hda/ to snd-*-.movedbycnxinstall or something then
puts the new modules in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/extra and those ones don't
load even after completely removing all alsa modules
"/etc/init.d/alsasound stop" which is the same as rebooting and I get
lsmod|grep snd giving nothing after that step.
Do I need to physically remove my alsa 1.0.11 modules out of the way?

No idea, the bug is in Conexant's installer.
Make sure you have kernel source installed that matches the running
kernel.

My kernel source is set up right, I'm positive. I just installed the new
1.0.12 rc1 that was posted today, still didn't fix my problem. My sound
works, I just can't get a high enough volume out of my internal speakers.
I also notice that the "pcm" volume slider seems to do nothing when I
change it up and down.

Even with the volume all the way up (both master and pcm) I'm getting
sound thats almost too faint to hear.

yea, I've never been as frustrated in my life as I have been in the last
hour.
I'm just gonna leave it alone and get external speakers. Conexant blows

So I bought external speakers and they are working well in linux. I do
notice that anything played through alsa is extremely scratchy though
(skips and pops galore). Alsa through xmms actually stops playing and
locks up the program sometimes. I've gotten around it by using oss
whenever possible (ie export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=dsp for games and such). Any
ideas why the audio quality in alsa is so poor?
