Project: ALSA - driver
Issue ID: 703
Category: 0_compilation problem_!!!
Reproducibility: always
Severity: major
Priority: normal
Status: assigned
Distribution: Gentoo 2004.3
Kernel Version: linux-2.6.9-nitro4 (also tried mm-sources and
gentoo-dev-sources)

Summary: alsa-driver-1.0.7 compile error dealing with
'remap_page_range'
Description:
Since I have a crappy OEM Dell SBLive! soundcard I can't use the emu10k1
module. I need the emu10k1x module which is now supported in alsa but not
in any kernel. I followed the instructions from
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_sound_mixer_aka_dmix . But no matter
what it won't compile. I changed the ALSA_CARDS variable to other cards,
and just one card, and it won't work.
======================================================================
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nsane457 - 12-06-04 11:01
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Keep in mind that this is a Gentoo Linux installation so the OS is setup to
input the compilation variables automatically. One is not expected to use
the ./configure command because the portage system inputs it
automatically. But as is evident , although the system of installation
seems correct, there is something buggy in the compile.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
tiwai - 12-06-04 20:51
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess it's a bug in gentoo's patch to configure script.

I got it to compile effectively with a generic kernel configuration. It
seems that this is the only way. Even if I configure the kernel with
sound support and/or alsa support and/or all the alsa options and drivers
it doesn't compile. But if I use a generic kernel config offered by
"genkernel all" and the compile the alsa-driver it works. And after it
compiles the driver it seems to recompile correctly afterwards, no matter
what config I used. So for now I just used a generic config to compile
the kernel, compiled alsa-driver, erased kernel, erased modules (but kept
the alsa modules), recompiled kernel with my own config (same kernel type,
however) and it works. Thanx.

The ALSA_CARDS environment variable should be comma delimeted, but that
isn't a factor here as it understood what you meant...
rlrevell, check the log, the configure line was this:
./configure --prefix=/usr --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc
--localstatedir=/var/lib --with-oss --with-kernel=/usr/src/linux

Keep in mind that this is a Gentoo Linux installation so the OS is setup to
input the compilation variables automatically. One is not expected to use
the ./configure command because the portage system inputs it
automatically. But as is evident , although the system of installation
seems correct, there is something buggy in the compile.

That sounds like an incorrect build procedure. You compile ALSA like
this:
./configure --with-cards=emu10k1x --with-kernel=/path/to/kernel/source
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The ALSA_CARDS environment variable should be comma delimeted, but that
isn't a factor here as it understood what you meant...
rlrevell, check the log, the configure line was this:
./configure --prefix=/usr --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc
--localstatedir=/var/lib --with-oss --with-kernel=/usr/src/linux
--with-build= --with-isapnp=yes --with-sequencer=yes --with-cards=emu10k1x

Issue ID: 703
Category: 0_compilation problem_!!!
Reproducibility: always
Severity: major
Priority: normal
Status: assigned
Distribution: Gentoo 2004.3
Kernel Version: linux-2.6.9-nitro4 (also tried mm-sources and
gentoo-dev-sources)

Summary: alsa-driver-1.0.7 compile error dealing with
'remap_page_range'
Description:
Since I have a crappy OEM Dell SBLive! soundcard I can't use the emu10k1
module. I need the emu10k1x module which is now supported in alsa but not
in any kernel. I followed the instructions from
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_sound_mixer_aka_dmix . But no matter
what it won't compile. I changed the ALSA_CARDS variable to other cards,
and just one card, and it won't work.

That sounds like an incorrect build procedure. You compile ALSA like
this:
./configure --with-cards=emu10k1x --with-kernel=/path/to/kernel/source
