* newbie needs help!

Hi,
Hi,
I want to have my linux kernel 2.4.18-14 in
Flash memory (Intels's 28F320C3, 32Mbit) and boot it
from there for my embedded device. Also some of my
application programs should reside in the Flash
memory. So I want to have a filesystem in the Flash
memory. I am new to this and dont know where to start?
Plz help me and give me suggestions. How
can I make use of MTD and JFFS projects?
With Regards,
Deya.

* Battery status update resolution

Hi
I apologize upfront, if this is not totally relevant to this list.
Some questions about the update resolution of the battery remaining
capacity status:
What is the capacity status update resolution of a state-of-the-art
'smart' battery ? I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 2600 with a Sanyo
LION control method battery, which updates its capacity status only for a
change of 30 - 40 mAh in the capacity (as observed through _BST control
method). What exactly is this limitation due to, is it the AML implementation
of the _BST method by the OEM or is it the battery hardware itself (say
number of bits in the A/D converter of the smart battery) ?
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Preempt, and/or occupy cpu space which would otherwise be available for the
root realtime task. If a SCHED_SOFTRR task or tasks share the same queue
with an SCHED_RR task, or occupy a higher queue, runtime of the
SCHED_SOFTRR tasks[s] will have an effect on the root realtime task. OTOH,
if SCHED_SOFTRR queues were below the 'full potency' realtime queues, they
would be able to neither preempt, not round-robin with the root authorized
realtime task.

I hope computers don't one day become so fast that SCHED_SOFTRR is
required for skipless mp3 decoding, but if they do, then I think
SCHED_SOFTRR should drop its weird polymorphing semantics ;)

I'm more than happy to help in any way I can to get this ported. but
I'm not really a programmer. If anyone out there wants to get this
started I'll test and even provide access to my OSX box (via ssh) if
necessary. :-)
as fabrice mentioned before (I just read the post thanx to gp@bnbt.de)
there is the darwine project. iThink that it would be of great benefit
to them and to qemu if some of the people here started talking to some
of the people there.
I'm thinking that if qemu and darwine can create a truly useful and
functional end product that apple might even get in on the game and
suddenly both projects will go mainstream. :-) I can dream can't I?

See the modification I made to these for cmc/cpe polling. I created
a new SAL call that runs with irqs enabled. SAL_{GET,CLEAR}_STATE_INFO*
make use of them. Nobody has spoken up yet about any platforms that
don't follow the SAL spec for these calls. Bjorn accepted the changes,
but it doesn't look like they're in bk yet. They're in 2.6.0-test3.
Does that eliminate this problem?

Kernel list menebers,
I have hade a problem with the ide-scsi driver - all kernel updates since
2.4.21 that is with 2.4.21 & 2.4.22-pre1 & 2.4.22-pre2 have not enable me to
mount my cdrom / writer.
The var/log/messages produce th error messages

The last message repeats very rapidly and effectivly crashes the system.
When I have enabled the scsi extra reporting options the same error occurs on
boot.
under 2.4.20 the working ata-scsi driver produces -

Jul 3 08:09:14 capulet kernel: Type: CD-ROM

I have attached my config listing
Any suggestion would be helpful.

SAL spec 9.1.
* Some SAL procedures are primarily intended for use during OS
initialization and designed to be called on one processor. These are
not required to be re-entrant. Some SAL procedures are required to be
called on multiple processors simultaneously. These are required to
be MP-safe but need not be re-entrant. Some SAL procedures may be
re-invoked on the same processor, e.g. the invocation of the
SAL_GET_STATE_INFO procedure for a CPE event may be interrupted by
the invocation of the same procedure for an MCA event on the same
processor. Such procedures need to be re-entrant as well as MP-safe.
These requirements are specified in Table 9.3. For the procedures
that are not re-entrant, the operating system is required to enforce
single threaded access.
Table 9-2. SAL Procedures
Function ID Re-entrancy
Procedure Description

SAL_SET_VECTORS 0x01000000 Register software code locations None
with SAL.
SAL_GET_STATE_INFO 0x01000001 Return Machine State information Yes

platform.
SAL_UPDATE_PAL 0x01000020 Update the contents of firmware None
blocks.
The current kernel code does not conform to those specifications.
SAL_GET_STATE_INFO_SIZE is supposed to be reentrant safe so it does not
deadlock, but the Linux code uses SAL_CALL() with a spinlock that will
hang for SAL_GET_STATE_INFO_SIZE during an existing SAL event. I have
hit this case.
The real fix is to change the non-conforming functions in sal.h to use
SAL_CALL_NOLOCK. But is it safe to do so, can all the platforms handle
reentrant SAL calls?
I know that SGI SAL code is reentrant safe so I break any existing SAL
lock, but only on SN2. If the other platforms say that they are
reentrant safe and the locking in sal.h is fixed then this sn2 specific
patch is not required. Until then, we need it in the kernel.

I inherited these so am not sure why they were SN2 specific. There is
no obvious reason why they should not be done for all platforms.

* [PATCH] apm.c, 2.4.20, limits rate of power status calls
From: Jim Carter @ 2003-08-10 5:04 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: sfr, linux-kernel; +Cc: michael
The Dell Inspiron series of laptops (Phoenix BIOS) is notorious because
"the clock runs slow in Linux". michael@talamasca.ocis.net "Michael
Deutschmann" (posted in comp.protocols.time.ntp) attributes this to use
of System Management Mode to interrogate the battery. Empirically on
the Inspiron 4100, clock interrupts are lost for 15 msec each time
/proc/apm is read. If a monitor applet checks the temperature, load,
wireless, battery, etc. once a second, the machine needs tick=10153,
which is outrageous.
This patch provides a new parameter, battery_interval (in seconds). The
APM_FUNC_GET_STATUS call is done no more frequently than this; saved values
are returned between times. The interval is adjusted so you see (almost)
every percent change in charge, and an actual call is enabled after every
incoming APM event, like a power source change. Ticks are still lost, but
much less frequently. Separately I posted a patch to time.c that detects
and recovers the lost ticks.
Unrelated, in apm_bios_call() and apm_bios_call_simple() the assembler
wanted a star for the indirect lcall, so I gave it one. This is with
gcc-3.3.
The patch is relative to 2.4.20 from SuSE Linux 8.2. As far as I can
see, there are no SuSE hacks in this file. Since the file changes
rarely, the patch should apply cleanly to other kernel versions. I have
been running the patched module for about 3 weeks with good effect,
including tests when I ran the battery down, to verify that calls were
done frequently enough to show (nearly) every percent change even in a
rapid decline.

* 2.6.0-test2 & 2.6.0-test3 unbootable with Cyrix III (VIA C3) CPU
From: Brandon Stewart @ 2003-08-10 5:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Linux-Kernel
[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 2250 bytes --]
I reported this error earlier, but I now believe the problem may be with
the kernel rather than my own inability to set things up.
The kernel will hang during processing of /sbin/init, but before the
INIT message appears on the console. Doing a magic sysreq reveals that
processing is stuck in /sbin/init. The call stack will show some of the
following functions, in no particular order:
common_interrupt
do_invalid_op
do_IRQ
do_notify_resume
do_signal
do_softirq
do_timer
error_code
force_sig_info
get_signal_to_deliver
i8042_timer_func
run_timer_softirq
timer_interrupt
update_wall_time
work_notifysig
Each time I do a sysreq, I get a different call stack. But it seems the
functions the call stack contains will be limited to those listed above.
The system is not deadlocked, I can still do capslock, and CTRL-ALT-DLT
will reboot the system.
o The setup is Mandrake 9.1, with the latest patches.
o The problem is not /sbin/init, because this machine boots just fine
with 2.4.21mdk. Furthermore, I downloaded and compiled from source
/sbin/init, making sure that gcc maintained i386 compatibility.
o Downgrading the processor compatibility has no effect. The entire
kernel was compiled with i386 compatibility. But it doesn't matter
whether I use i586, Cyrix III, or i386, the boot still hangs.
o It's unlikely a problem with my .config, because doing a make
oldconfig, adding only the minimal additional options to have a
functioning system (the CONSOLE parameters, for example), has the same
exact problem.
o The problem is not with Mandrake 9.1 recompiling kernels, because I
was able to recompile and boot the 2.4.21mdk kernel.
o The problem is not with Mandrake 9.1 recompiling 2.6 kernels, because
I was able to recompile and boot the 2.6 kernel on another machine
(Intel P4).
o Recent versions of module-init-tools are installed, but it made no
difference between 9.9 and 9.11a.
o The issue is the same in 2.6.0-test2 and 2.6.0-test3
I have attached the .config I have been using. Keep in mind that the
standard Mandrake distribution config was no different. I think the
issue is compatibility with Cyrix III because of the do_invalid_op
instructions.
Any help, suggestions, or pointers are appreciated.

* RE: [Dri-devel] Linux kernel PCI IDs vs Xfree
From: Jon Smirl @ 2003-08-10 4:20 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Alexander Stohr, fb-devel, dri-devel
In-Reply-To: <328A30E823B7D511A0BF00065B042A3B0172D768@fgl00exh01.fgl.atitech.com>

What do you think about the attached patch?
I removed this, it just looks wrong and it conflicts
with Rage128
- /* Radeon M4 */
-#define PCI_DEVICE_ID_ATI_RADEON_LE 0x4d45
-#define PCI_DEVICE_ID_ATI_RADEON_LF 0x4d46
Radeonfb wasn't using them anyway.
Updated pci_ids.h to reflect all of the Rage128 ones
from XFree.
Adjusted the aty128fb driver to reflect the new ids.
Figured out why aty128fb wouldn't modprobe and fixed
it.
I think I'm in agreement with
http://www.yourvote.com/pci but we may want to adjust
a few names. There are name strings in yourvote that
aren't in the kernel yet but someone should do an
update sooner or later.
It would probably be better to ask the card if it is
AGP or PCI. Is there any way to do this other than
using the ID table and recording it manually?
I found these diffs while working on my standalone
OpenGL. It relies on the the framebuffer drivers to
find the hardware for it so they need to get it right.

I looked at the assembly (ppc, gcc 3.2.3) and didn't
see any overhead.
Note that the kernel code is broken for the likely()
macro, since 42 is a perfectly good truth value in C.

The !!x gives you a 0 or 1 while converting the type.
So a (char*)0xfda9c80300000000ull will become a 1 of
an acceptable type, allowing the macro to work as desired.

OK, fair enough. I liked the idea because it let things stay optional,
but also gave us no excuse not to merge Matt's changes.
I would have no problem requiring cryptoapi, but what if it increases in
size? Requiring a large (and definitely oft-used for many people)
feature isn't size, either.

Does the benh patchset include any fixes for radeonfb on non-powerpc archs?
I have a laptop with a Radeon M7 that turns the screen solid white if I use
the fb at all. This includes the fbset or any sdl game on the console.

I definitely agree, removing the integrity of random.c is not
an option. Even things inside the kernel itself rely upon
get_random_bytes() for anti-DoS measures.

* 2.6.0-test3-mm1
From: Andrew Morton @ 2003-08-10 3:39 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: linux-kernel, linux-mm
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.0-test3/2.6.0-test3-mm1
. Manfred might have fixed the long-standing task_struct use-after-free
bug which happens occasionally on preemptible kernels.
. This kernel immediately triplefaults when compiled with gcc-2.95.3 and
CONFIG_KGDB. It is due to compiling with "-ggdb" or "-gdwarf-2". When
compiled with "-g" it works OK, but gdb screws that up.
Moral: use a later gcc if you're a kgdb user.
. Lots of fixes for random things, as usual. Keep 'em coming.

* 2.6.0-test3-mm1
Changes since 2.6.0-test2-mm5:

Eek, let's not go there. Most of the users of get_random_bytes()
depend on it being strong enough for cryptographic purposes. And we've
long guaranteed the existence of a cryptographically strong
/dev/urandom. If userspace could no longer rely on it being there,
people would be forced to go back to poorly reinventing it in
userspace - not good. Having random.c be nonoptional is a good note to
embedded folks that they should think long and hard before ripping it
out.

OK.
Actually, this flag was never used because of its redundancy
it is not the only place where it is not set.

* Owner ID wraparound problem during _BST
From: Manish Prasad @ 2003-08-10 2:51 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: acpi-devel-5NWGOfrQmneRv+LV9MX5uipxlwaOVQ5f
Hi
I'm using 2.4.20 kernel with ACPI-patch 20021212. I found on sourceforge
that 20030523 has fixed the OwnerId wraparound problem. I'm currently
looking at the new sources and if I'm getting it right, the only change
related to this is in aclocal.h, where the values of ACPI_FIRST_METHOD_ID
and ACPI_FIRST_TABLE_ID have been changed to provide more room for
TYPE_METHOD owner_ids to grow before wrapping around (upto 0xF000 as
opposed to 0x8000 earlier). Would be great if some one could confirm if
this is indeed the only change related to fixing this problem. Also, what
exactly is the reason why this value *has* to be 16-bit and not bigger.
Thanks in advance !
Best,
--Manish
