* what is the purpose of "DISTRO =" *inside* a distro conf file?

  perusing the distro conf files in the meta-yocto layer and noticed
that all of them have a line of the form

  DISTRO = "poky-lsb"

or what have you. what is the purpose of that line inside the distro
conf file of the same name? is it required?
