[Severity: Medium]
When the scheduler is stopped, does this early return leak dynamically
allocated messages?
If untrusted userspace triggers an error path by queuing property change
messages (like SET_SCHED_PROPS) and then causes the queue to hang, wedge, or
close during teardown, this worker exits without draining or freeing pending
dynamically allocated messages.
During queue teardown, xe_sched_fini() and other cleanup paths fail to
traverse sched->msgs and kfree() dynamically allocated messages before the
list and lock are destroyed.

[Severity: Medium]
Does this tracepoint still contain a data race by reading the unstable
msg->opcode?
The patch addresses a data race by extracting msg->opcode into a local
variable under msg_lock, because static messages can be concurrently
re-enqueued modifying their opcode outside the lock. However,
trace_xe_sched_msg_recv(msg) continues to read msg->opcode directly via the
xe_sched_msg event class:
drivers/gpu/drm/xe/xe_trace.h:DECLARE_EVENT_CLASS(xe_sched_msg) {
...
__entry->opcode = msg->opcode;
...
}
Because trace_xe_sched_msg_recv() is called here with the message pointer,
rather than the stable extracted opcode, this leaves a data race where the
tracepoint may log an incorrect opcode or trigger KCSAN warnings.

Not right - queues always start again regardless of any type of hang.

When an FD is closed with many exec queues, teardown relies on the TDR
path to clean up scheduling. However, the TDR handling is serialized
(i.e., only one exec queue is processed at a time), which can make it
too slow compared to GuC scheduling activity.
In this window, GuC may continue to schedule contexts backed by
invalid page tables, leading to a cascade of CAT errors and repeated
engine resets. This significantly increases recovery time and can
degrade system stability.
To mitigate this, eagerly disable scheduling by sending a self-message
outside of the TDR path. This prevents further scheduling of invalid
contexts and avoids the CAT error/reset cascade.
This change improves robustness and reduces recovery latency in
multiple queue teardown scenarios.

I think this patch was designed as a holdover for until exec_queue_kill_sync
was implemented, and as such is unneeded in the series that introduces
exec_queue_kill_sync.
Matt, is this correct? Or does this patch serve a different purpose?
I'm not blocking on this (yet), just want some clarification.

The early KILL message disables GuC scheduling outside the serialized
TDR path, but xe_file_close() does not wait for it to complete before
dropping queue references. GuC may still schedule contexts whose page
tables are being torn down, producing CAT errors and engine resets.
Split FD close teardown into two passes: first kill every queue so all
KILL messages are queued in parallel, then call the new
xe_exec_queue_kill_sync() for every queue before dropping references.
The GuC backend implementation flushes the message worker while the
static KILL message is pending, then waits for scheduling to be
disabled with no pending enable/disable. The wait also completes when
GuC submission is stopped, VF recovery is in progress, or the queue is
wedged.
Wake ct.wq waiters when a scheduling-disable SCHED_DONE is processed so
the waiter is woken as soon as scheduling is disabled.

drm/xe: Synchronously wait for queue kill on FD close
The early KILL message disables GuC scheduling outside the serialized
TDR path, but xe_file_close() does not wait for it to complete before
dropping queue references. Split FD close teardown into two passes:
first kill every queue, then wait using xe_exec_queue_kill_sync().

[Severity: High]
Does this code leave other teardown paths vulnerable to CAT errors?
While xe_file_close() was updated to use this new sync function, it appears
xe_exec_queue_destroy_ioctl() and xe_vm_close_and_put() both still call
xe_exec_queue_kill() followed immediately by xe_exec_queue_put() without
waiting.
If userspace destroys a user queue and then destroys its VM,
xe_vm_close_and_put() synchronously destroys the VM's page tables while GuC
is still actively scheduling the queue. Similarly, for the internal kernel
bind queue (vm->q), xe_vm_close_and_put() kills it and proceeds to destroy
the page tables. This results in GuC scheduling contexts with torn-down
page tables, causing IOMMU CAT errors and unrecoverable engine resets.

[Severity: High]
Can this wait hang forever if the GuC firmware silently drops the H2G DISABLE
message or hangs without triggering a global watchdog wedge?
If called on an idle queue (no pending jobs), the Time-out Driven Recovery
(TDR) will not fire. xe_sched_tdr_queue_imm() calls
drm_sched_tdr_queue_imm(), which only schedules the timeout worker if there
are pending jobs. Even if the worker runs, drm_sched_job_timedout() exits
early if the pending list is empty.
Since this uses an unbounded wait_event() without a timeout, it could cause
the close() syscall to hang forever in uninterruptible sleep (D state),
leading to an unkillable process. Other functions like enable_scheduling()
and disable_scheduling_deregister() use wait_event_timeout() and manually
trigger xe_gt_reset_async() on timeout to prevent this.

I think we assume aside from an unexpected file close (segfault on user
app, ctrl-c), a user shall be well behavied (it is) and at worst it
spams dmesgs on debug levels.

This is right, would have a reasonable timeout even though eventually a
GT reset pops us out here if the GuC stops responding.

You can do the put in the same loop as xe_exec_queue_kill_sync.

I'm honestly not quite following the logic above, and I don't think this
is necessary. At this point, we've already queued a kill message. It will
eventually run, or the TDR will fire, or a GT reset will occur. Any of
these paths should eventually clear the flags below.
I can see that this was LLM-assisted, and it may well be smarter than me
here, but I don't understand why this change is needed.

A GT reset saves on the GuC taking a nap but that is unbounded,
wait_event_timeout gives us a bound.

The loop was intended to ensure all queued KILL messages had been
processed before tear down continued. As you point out, those
messages should be handled through normal processing, TDR, or GT reset.
I’ll remove the flush_work()/pending-message loop and bound the
scheduling-state wait with wait_event_timeout().

What is the best action when this wait times out? We have no confirmation
that GuC has stopped scheduling, yet xe_file_close() will continue
tearing down the VM. Is it acceptable to continue teardown, or should
timeout
trigger GT reset recovery? If so, should we queue it with
xe_gt_reset_async()
or wait for it to complete with xe_gt_reset() before proceeding?

I'd just queue a xe_gt_reset_async, no need to wait as things have gone
badly at this point.

drm/xe: Synchronously wait for queue kill on FD close
The early KILL message disables GuC scheduling outside the serialized
TDR path, but xe_file_close() does not wait for it to complete before
dropping queue references.
