Summary: Front / rear out of sync
Description:
When using the config specified below the sound gets out of sync (front and
rear sound) in xmms. The higher cpu-usage is the faster the sound goes
out-of-sync. When using mplayer in combo with this config, cpu usage goes
up, and the image of the movie halts but sound keeps playing. Without this
config the cpu-usage is around 20%. Tested on P4 2.8GHz.
In alsa <1.0 the front and rear sound was duplicated, is it possible to
reimplement that behaviour again?

Well, I don't remember that the signal duplication was implemented on this
chip.
Which version was that? Was it automatically enabled when you play a
normal PCM?

I have this chipset according to "lspci"
Multimedia audio controller: Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24 [CrystalClear
SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] (rev 01)
And i am pretty sure 0.90rc3 (not the only one though) duplicated the
sound, so front and rear were exactly the same. In the windows-driver
(atleast 3 years back, havent checked lately) this was also an option.
And yes, it was automatically enabled.

signal is duplicated. From witch version this feature was disabled? I
don't want to test every version to find it!

Seems a problem caused by setting EAM(Extended Audio Mode) bit.

Oh thanks for finding it out.
Do you have any regression by disabling it?
e.g. does 4.0 output still work?

I'm using a Terratec XFire which is cs46xx based.
Setting the EAM Bit was the only possiblity to get 4 seperated output
channels (2 times stereo) instead of the front stereo channels duplicated
to the rear channels.

It would be very nice to have a mixer control for setting the EAM status
anytime using an alsa mixing app.

Yes, it sounds reasonable.

The first patch is to alsa-kernel tree, which adds "Duplicate Front" mixer
control. The second patch is for alsa-lib, which modifies the CS46xx card
config to change the new switch automatically off when rear or 4.0 PCM is
used.

Give it a try.

Thanks!
At the moment I'm using alsa from my distro (mdk10.1) and I never compiled
alsa for 2.6 kernel -- only for 2.4. Probably it'll take some time until I
find some time to try the changes.

Thanks!
At the moment I'm using alsa from my distro (mdk10.1) and I never compiled
alsa for 2.6 kernel -- only for 2.4. Probably it'll take some time until I
find some time to try the changes.

In alsa <1.0 the front and rear sound was duplicated, is it possible to
reimplement that behaviour again?

pcm.ch40dup {
        type route
