Summary: No Sound with snd-hda-intel driver Asus P5VDC-MX
Description:
Kernel is up-to-date Xen kernel.

Initial install did not recognize the sound on an ASUS P5VDC-MX
motherboard.
Motherboard has southbridge VIA VT8251. CODEC is Realtek ACL653 AC'97 6
channel
Audio. Tried the updated drivers in 002404, but was unsuccessful. Also
tried
drivers on VIA site and Realltek site. The last couple of tries show no
errors
in compiling, make, etc. However, as I am just above novice in
understanding
everything about Linux, this has thrown me for a loop.

This seems to be a kudzu bug. It's loading the wrong driver. I don't see
any Intel HDA device on your system.

00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 70)

This should be using the snd-via82xx driver

02:01.0 Audio device: VIA Technologies, Inc. VIA High Definition Audio
Controller

Not sure what this is. lspci -vn output?

Hi again. I'm glad to report that I got it to work. With kernel
gentoo-2.6.16-r3 and alsa-driver-1.0.11. Currently is working on x86_64, 2
chanels (I have to rearange to check for 4 and 6), maybe later I check on
i386 too. I forgot to mention the module is via82xx.

I think it's an ACPI IRQ routing bug. Please report to linux-kernel.

No it's not working. It plays something just once for about one sec and
stops. If I start again nothing comes out.

Does the interrupt count for the soundcard increase in /proc/interrupts
when playing sound?

I have disabled my onboard via snd card and sata. Currently I use some
external creative pci card. My board is exatctly the same.

Actually this

00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 70)

is the real onboard sound card. And it is detected by kernel, lspci shows
it, but this HDA apears and kills the PCI slots :(.

So if you boot with the default settings lspci shows no sound cards at
all?

This is a kernel or BIOS issue - there's nothing ALSA can do if the sound
card doesn't appear on the bus.

What sound card is this thing supposed to have? I can't believe you both
have the same board but lspci is showing three different soundcards?

I have disabled my onboard via snd card and sata. Currently I use some
external creative pci card. My board is exatctly the same.

Despite this PCI/whatever issue, the fact is that the sound is not working.
Maybe this is all related to the vt8251 chipset.

I have the same board and this "VIA Technologies, Inc. VIA High Definition

thinks there is this VIA HDA, but it's not. I compiled kernel with "PCI

As I am a step above novice when it comes to Linux, where exactly do I find
via82xx.c file? I am assuming the kernel, but at this point, you have
me...

I have the same board and this "VIA Technologies, Inc. VIA High Definition
Audio Controller" is I think uncorrectly recognised and this makes the two
PCI slots unusable (anything pluged in this slots wont work), couse kernel
thinks there is this VIA HDA, but it's not. I compiled kernel with "PCI
access mode"=BIOS and PCIx support turned off, and now they works. Here my

Try adding { .subvendor = 0x1043, .subdevice = 0x81b9, .action =
VIA_DXS_SRC } to the PCI ids in via82xx.c for the first device.

As for the "VIA high definition audio controller", I think that's a new
device that isn't supported yet. tiwai?

Try adding { .subvendor = 0x1043, .subdevice = 0x81b9, .action =
VIA_DXS_SRC } to the PCI ids in via82xx.c for the first device.

As for the "VIA high definition audio controller", I think that's a new
device that isn't supported yet. tiwai?

This seems to be a kudzu bug. It's loading the wrong driver. I don't see
any Intel HDA device on your system.

00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
