Software Environment:
Gentoo Hardened Server - No X.org

Problem Description:
When I try to insert either "e_powersaver" or "acpi-cpufreq" module, modprobe
tells me "No such device".

Steps to reproduce:
# modprobe e_powersaver
FATAL: Error inserting e_powersaver
(/lib/modules/2.6.23-hardened-r9/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/e_powersaver.ko):
No such device

# modprobe acpi-cpufreq
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq
(/lib/modules/2.6.23-hardened-r9/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko):
No such device

No message seems to be added to both dmesg and syslog.

I also tried both vanilla kernel versions 2.6.24 and .25.

Do you run the latest BIOS?
If not, better update and try again.

I tried to update the BIOS and the VIA flash utility corrupted it! I'm going to
retry when I receive the motherboard's replacement.

There is something I can try that avoids BIOS update? I'm kinda scared... :(

Below discussion from Via Arena forums.

> C7-D Model A (1.5/2 GHz) and model D (1.5 Ghz) dosen't support PowerSaver.
> C7-D Model D (1.8/2 GHz) support PowerSaver (P-States P0-P1).
> The e_powersaver driver of kernel 2.6.21-rc6 need to update for new VIA C7/C7D/C7M/Eden Model D CPU.
> VIA is testing it.
> If the driver was tested by VIA QA approval, VIA will deliver it.
And they did. Patch was available from Viaarena. I don't know it's current
state.

I found the patch here:
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=22&DSCat=32&DCatType=3.

Quote from that page: "The voltage can be adjusted on C7 CPU". It doesn't
differ between models.

------- Comment #6 from trenn@suse.de 2008-04-30 03:21 -------
Works for me with a 1,2 GHz Esther CPU (I will post cpuinfo when I am at home).
I didn't check the very details as everything just worked out of the box with
latest openSUSE 11.0.
I have a Jetway mainboard and they have some "default" ACPI implementation put
into their BIOS. Even fan and temperature are exposed via ACPI. Also the
cpufreq states are exposed via ACPI because it's acpi-cpufreq providing
cpufreq.
Therefore I am pretty sure you have an ACPI BIOS problem.
Can you attach dmesg and acpidump output, pls.
