Hello, 

Nouveau driver (0.0.16.git20110323.1614-1.1, OpenSuse 11.4, KDE) fully ignores
gamma and brightness settings in KDE Display settings and xrandr --gamma.

My video is:

When setting up the gamma one should use xrandr --gamma (or the DE's
equivalent)
Note tools based on xgamma will not work

The issue is related to the kernel used - 2.6.38 should work perfectly, whereas
2.6.39 will not
