Bug #: 42678
Summary: Dual Screen Monitor Gnome-shell 3 hard lock ups - ATI
open source Radeon
Classification: Unclassified
Product: Mesa
Version: unspecified
Platform: x86-64 (AMD64)
OS/Version: Linux (All)
Status: NEW
Severity: blocker
Priority: medium
Component: Drivers/Gallium/r600
AssignedTo: dri-devel@lists.freedesktop.org
ReportedBy: Wattos@gmail.com
Created attachment 53265

last 3000 lines of .xsession-errors
I am running Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit with gnome shell 3,2 on a Intel i7-940XM with
an ATI Radeon HD 5850M. The drivers which are currently being used are the open
source drivers (xf86-video-ati 6.14.99).
I am experiencing random (on save, on dialog open, on workspace switch) hard
lockups (CTRL + ALT + F1 doesnt work, nor does ALT+PrntScrn R S E I U B). This
only happens when using two screens (independent of which output (e.g.
Displayport + VGA, Displayport + Notebook LCD) are used).
This issue is a complete show stopper since the pc requires a hard reboot and
any unsaved items are lost indefinitely (or worse, things might get corrupted).
I am attaching the last 3000 lines of .xsession-errors.
uname -a:
Linux filipw-M15x 3.0.0-12-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 14:56:25 UTC 2011

What version of mesa are you using? Does a newer version help? Does using a
non-interlaced mode fix the issue?

I think I am using 7.11-0ubuntu3 (if that makes sense)
How do I turn on non-interlaced mode?

Can you try a newer version? I believe ubuntu provides testing PPAs.

Yes, but there have been a lot of changes since 7.11 was released that will end
up in 7.12. If we can identify a fix in what will become 7.12, we can
potentially back port it to 7.11.

If none of Alex's suggestions help, does either of the following options work
around the problem?
Option "SwapbuffersWait" "off"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "off"

Thanks for the input.
At this moment I have reinstalled the open source drivers and it seems stable
now. I have tried using catalyst and maybe that has caused issues (as catalyst
apparently overwrites the mesa libraries).
If I dont experience any hard freezes anymore, I will close the issue.

So, after I ran the following on my system:
sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mesa-glx:i386
libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
sudo rm -rf /etc/ati
I still get the occasional hard freeze (the frequency was reduced to 2 - 4
times a day, which is a lot better than it was before).
Is it possible that the old fglrx driver touched some other libraries which I
need to install? if yes, which one would those be?
As a next step, I will try the option per Xorg config

Filip, Ubuntu 11.10 reached EOL on May 9, 2013. For more on this, please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases .
If this is reproducible on a supported release, it will help immensely if you
filed a new report with Ubuntu by ensuring you have the package xdiagnose
installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging
information running the following from a terminal:
ubuntu-bug xorg
Also, please feel free to subscribe me to it.
For more on why this is helpful, please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.
