Hey!
Here we go again. I just checked out the 2.6.2 release ChangeLog.
Only thing I can see in there related to UML is a minor compile
fix.
Do get an SKAS3/4 2.6.2 Host, and a 2.6.2 guest. What do I
need? the Kernel Source, Ingos' combo patch (for SKAS), and
the um-patch-2.6.1?
Thanks,
George

Mainly ok, only some notes:
1) Use Ingo's combo only for the host kernel (since the UML part for itself is
out-of-date).
2) Now I've tested uml-patch-2.6.2 and there are a few minor rejects with that
patch. They are solved properly in this patch (I'm going to upload it, not
yet done):
http://web.tiscali.it/no-redirect-tiscali/blaisorblade/linux/archives/UML/2.6.2-v1/uml-patch-2.6.2-0.bz2
I've given it a quick test and it compiles and boots correctly, at least in
the reduced configuration I tried.
If you don't find it, that should mean that Jeff Dike already posted his patch
(which has also some functional changes).
That one has not any real change from Jeff Dike one; so with it don't enable
modules. If you want to use modules, read instructions at:
http://web.tiscali.it/no-redirect-tiscali/blaisorblade/
you will probably choose to download:
http://web.tiscali.it/no-redirect-tiscali/blaisorblade/linux/archives/UML/2.6.2-v1/00-Combo-v1.bz2
Bye

i'm still confused although i read everything on the page above.
what's the patch to use for patching the host-kernel? the 00-Combo one,
or the other one?

This patch doesn't give me any option to turn on /proc/mm
> http://web.tiscali.it/no-redirect-tiscali/blaisorblade/linux/archives/UML/2.6.2-v1/00-Combo-v1.bz2
This patch doesn't apply correctly to vanilla 2.6.2 sources

Wait a moment:
1) That is a patch only for the UML kernel (no host-skas).
2) So, when you apply it, since it's for UML, you must not do:
make menuconfig
but
make menuconfig ARCH=um
where ARCH=um means "don't configure for the host but for the guest kernel".
Also follow the "compiling it" link on the left bar on the Uml main site and
read instructions carefully.
IIRC you won't be able to compile a host kernel with only that patch.
3) If you follow point 2, you will see the /proc/mm option under "UML-specific
options". However that's not what you need.

You must apply those in order and they are for the UML kernel.
I don't want to repeat myself, but I do
"1) Use Ingo's combo only for the host kernel (since the UML part for itself
is out-of-date)."
You must currently use that patch on a vanilla kernel tree to get host-skas.
Remember to use two separate kernel trees - one for the host (with Ingo's
combo) and one for the guest (with the two patches above from me).
For the host kernel (after applying Ingo's combo), you can find /proc/mm under
"Processor type and features".

i guess you mean redhat.com/~mingo/UML-patches/uml-combo-2.6.0-A7
well, i tried to apply it to 2.6.2 vanilla and it doesn't apply without
errors. in particular hunk #3 for mm/memory.c fails :-(
i know that i have to ignore errors for files in arch/um.
so i tried to apply the rejected hunk manually to mm/memory.c but it
seems that this section (lines 725 and beyond) is already patched. can
somebody take a look at that section and tell me if in_gate_area() is OK
there?

Right.

You must unapply all the hunks for mm/memory.c for 2.6.2. Unapply the patch or
use a clean source tree, then before applying the patch remove (by hand
editing) the whole section about mm/memory.c. The --- and +++ name the file
the following lines refer to. Also, remember using patch --dry-run to check
before applying what rejects appear, since with --dry-run patch doesn't
modify the patched files.
