Sound recording

[Spectral Composer]

Any advice on recording off the command line?  I tried "rec -d /dev/dsp
somefile.wav" and it's not grabbing any input.  I imagined this was way
too simple.  I'm trying to record a record.  Any help would be
appreciated.

Hello.

I tried to get some help on the users list, usenet, archives, whatever
but ... I still don't know whether my card even supposed to work with
ALSA. Sound works OK except
for the recording.

lspci says : 

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER
(ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

alsamixer says it's 
Realtek ALC850

Any clue would be extremely appricieated

Your Line-In and Mic-In jacks have been configured as outputs for 5.1
sound.  Toggle these mixer controls in alsamixer.

Unfortunately it did not help much. I attached the new "amixer
contents" output. Still recording does not work...

Please try ALSA 1.0.9, it has another mixer control for front panel
mics that might help.

Hi.

I guess you hoped not to hear from me again, but unfortunately alsa
1.0.9 did not help much. I also did not find any new controls in the
mixer.

Any more ideas/suggestions ?

BTW, I'm willing (and capable) to debug the driver, if it may help...
