Summary: System stops completely when playing audio
Description:
I have a Tascam US-428. Wehen I connect to the USB, the driver is loaded,
the USB-LED of the 428 lights up. When I try to play audio (e.g. with
aplay or XMMS), the computer immedeately stops working. All I can do is to
push the reset-button. No log-entrys, nothing.
======================================================================
----------------------------------------------------------------------
karsten - 12-31-04 16:31
----------------------------------------------------------------------
maybe also usx2yloader didn't run / exist?
it has to be called before.
Complete sequence goes like this:
$ usx2yloader
$ modprobe snd-seq
$ us428control
----------------------------------------------------------------------
spirou - 01-02-05 20:21
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Now I put snd-seq to /etc/modules.autoload.d so it gets loaded before
everything, and now it works :)! So the bootsequence here is
snd-seq
usx2yloader (via hotplug/tascam.fw)
us428control (via hotplug/tascam.fpga)
snd-usb-usx2y (? Guess hotplug does this for me..)
I'm a little confused, because I already tried it without having snd-seq
autoloaded, and it didn't work, although everything else has been
unchanged.
I did modprobe snd-seq, then plugged the us428 in which starts the
hotplug-scripts - nothing. With snd-seq autoloaded everything's fine.
Anyway, thanks a few million times for your patience! :)

before

to get us428control started by hotplug, you need to make shure
that "modprobe snd-seq" happened before the hotpolug event.
hmmmm: maybe I should change the relevant hotplug script to make shure
snd-seq is loaded...

$ modprobe snd-seq
before
$ us428control
to get us428control started by hotplug, you need to make shure
that "modprobe snd-seq" happened before the hotpolug event.
hmmmm: maybe I should change the relevant hotplug script to make shure
snd-seq is loaded...

both keyboard dead & hangup shutting down after switching us428 off happen
here also sometimes. I think it is ok when I unload the snd-usb-usx2y
module first. ( $/etc/init.d/alsasound stop)
To the silence problem:
There is no alsa-mixer interface yet.
Is us428control activ? Check by pressing "INPUT MONITOR".
If us428control is activ, put the "MASTER" slider to 9 NOT 10.
10 magically equals 0 after us428 having started. (Seams to be some
feedback omitting strategy.)
If this doesn't help: can you verify that audio is really being played by
watching some transport indicators?
Any difference when you set nrpacks=1 on modprobe snd-usb-usx2y?
$rmmod snd-usb-usx2y
$modprobe snd-usb-usx2y nrpacks=1

Now I have updated the alsa-drivers, now at least the System doesn't hang
when I Play audio, but there is no output (can't hear anything). I would
assume the usual problem with muted outputs, but alsamixer doesn't find
any controls.
Another problem still exists: If the US-428 gets disconnected after its
drivers and firmware have been loaded, the keyboard is dead. I can use the
mouse normally, but if I try to do a shutdown, the system hangs again.
Version is 0.8.6, kernel is now 2.6.10-gentoo (without the kernel-built-in
alsa-modules).

SiS963 has OHCI usb and US-X2Y Version 0.7.2 is not working on OHCI usb;-)
Solution is to get newest alsa driver version.
For ohci you need version >= 0.8.6 of snd-usb-usx2y.
(I think (not really shure...) kernel 2.6.10-rc2-mm4 also has it.)
