I've seen this actually. The link you gave me:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=audigyls
doesn't work (permission denied). 

I understand that it is not fully supported (I'm willing to do what I
can and wait if necessary), but I don't know exactly what I need to do
to recompile. Which .diff file am I using to patch? Am I patching the
kernel directly? I compiled alsa-1.0.7, like I said- do I need to try
to compile the CVS?

How do I go about patching the kernel (do I just need to search for
"alsa-kernel/alsa-***" like in the post from jdc? )

Thanks so very much for all your help already- the alsa project has
done a lot for sound in Linux!!!

Sorry, I just had found the post about your soundcard on alsa-user, I 
don't know anything more about it. http://alsa.opensrc.org/ returns:
