Hello all,

I, like many other people, would really like to see support for the E450 in
envctrl. But as nobody seems to be working on this at the moment, I thought
offering an incentive may help.

So to the first person[s] to implement the support, I will pay $100 (US). OK,
so that isn't a lot of money, but as lots of people need this feature I'm
hoping some will come forward and add to it.

Full details here:
http://www.david-web.co.uk/index.php?pagename=envctrl

Regards,
David.

How about throwing in a machine to work on it...the problem isn't time or
money, it's having _physical_ access to the equipment.

Ah yes but that's a lot more complicated (and expensive) to arrange...
The best I can offer is shell access.

Maybe I could loan my machine to someone in the UK, but I'm not sure there are
any UK-based SPARC kernel hackers.

David.

i can hand out such a machine in any confuguration
and with any SUN card for some weeks to someone
in germany in case this helps.

It's not something that can just be "access". A developer for something
like this would need to have one for some time (we developers can't just
set aside a couple of days just to do this). If I had one, I could
probably get around to it within a few weeks. Would be the same for David
(he probably has less time than I do).

Whomever takes this on for 2.6 should seriously consider using the
envctrl framework I posted to the sparclinux list for SUNW,envctrltwo
support. Contact me off-list if you want the latest 2.6 kernel patch.
Adding E450 support should be straightforward, and a lot lless work
than the current roll-your-own method.

I'd just do it, but alas I don't have the hardware, either. I'd
consider remote access, but folks are usually not dedicated enough to
make this work.

OK, how about I scrap the bounty idea and instead offer $150 (£80/117EUR)
towards shipping?

David.

If anybody can provide networked console access to such a system, I
may be convinced to play with it a bit (better still if you have a
networked power supply involved). Please only volunteer if you are
able to assist with reboots/compiles/testing and plan to be reliable
(this has been a problem often enough).

Also, there is always the possibility the system could be damaged--
don't volunteer if the system is not yours to destroy or you disagree
with indemnifying all persons involved against such damage.

Thanks,
E

OK, this thread has gone quiet...

If I agree to pay the shipping, is there someone (preferably in the US) who
has an E450 they can loan to a developer for at least a month?

Cheers,
David.

We've got a E450 we're willing to donate and ship to someone in the US.

Please let me know me know any further requirements and I'll see what we

Which developer wants it then?

Jeff: do you mean that you'll pay shipping too? If not, don't worry I'll cover
it. If so, I'll go back to offering $100 to whichever developer takes on the
job.

Cheers,
David.

We'll cover shipping in the US along with donation of the machine. It's
been retired and is currently taking up space on the floor.

One individual has indicated that he would be interested in working on
this project, but he also indicated that he doesn't necessarily want to
end up with the machine permanently.

If there's anyone else who is interested, please let me and/or the list
know and we can get this sorted out.

Thanks,

- Jeff

Excellent.
If you let me know the spec, I'll see if the Debian project will have a use
for it once this project is finished.

I'll ask once again, as well. I'm willing to provide a patch against
kernel.org 2.6.11.8 for a very incomplete and guaranteed
non-functional envctrl driver for the E450 to anybody willing to run
it on their system, report results back to me and be the least bit
responsive to testing modifications. Contact me directly if you have
the hardware and the dedication-- the patch is too big for broadcast
to the list.

It's an e450 (of course), 3GB RAM, (3) 4.5 GB drives, (8) 36GB drives
(2) 400 Mhz procs (I think), 3 power supplies, dual backplanes, dual
controllers, fast ethernet card, and a sun gigabit over fiber network
card. We can provide the rackmount sliding tray as well.

Well I contacted the hardware donations person at Debian and they haven't
replied, so I can only presume that they don't want it (!), so I don't know
what to suggest if you can't find a developer who wants it. Maybe the Gentoo
SPARC people...?

Failing that, just put it on eBay ;-)

David.

Hi David!

Maybe you could/should contact sourceforge, too?

On the other hand, shipping it to some other place may cost so much and would
be so much trouble that it simply doesn't pay off?

My experience shows me that it is best to try to give such stuff as a gift to
some local Linux/Unix user group. - They can afford to get the stuff, they
are interested and they are capable. - And if they are really nice, they make
it free/open acessible in the net.

Yours,

Herbert

If no one else is willing, the Aurora SPARC Project would be more than
willing to take ownership of this machine and work with Eric Brower to
get envctrl working on it.

That sounds like a good idea to me, but it's Jeff's machine - what do you
think Jeff?

Eric: does the idea sound workable to you?

Cheers,
David.

Sounds fine to me. I'd prefer physical access to the box (or I retain
it for some period of time then pass it on) but I could live with
network console and power if Aurora can provide that-- least easily I
could go back-and-forth with Aurora folks testing drivers. Where are
the Aurora folks located?

We could hold the box in Chicago, IL, Westford, MA, or maybe Raleigh,
NC. Network console at the prom level is easy, network power would be a
little more difficult (I don't have any network controlled power
switches).

Alternately, why don't we just send this machine to Eric, let him fix
the code directly, then send it to Aurora when he's done?

Shipping the system across the country twice likely costs more than
the value of the system. I don't mind working via network console or
interactively with the Aurora folks (or anyone who would be
responsive).

In that case, I think we should continue with having it hosted at Aurora.

Tom & Jeff: could you two make contact and arrange the shipping?
Eric: will try the initial patch you sent me this week.

Thanks all,
David.

I'm coming into this a bit late, but I've got an E450 which I've
squandered at work and could get access to it set up for Ben or whoever
is necessary.

I don't think access to another machine is needed, but I'm sure Eric would
find it useful if you could test his patches. The more testers the better!

David.
