Hi,
It seems a lot of people are unaware that there is a stable branch where
only review patches get applied:
org.openembedded.angstrom-2007.12-stable
So I don't want to hear anymore of those "OE is unstable" or "There is
no stable branch" complaints anymore, mmmmkay ;)
regards,
Koen

This is a long running topic on irc at the moment since I "broke" OE.dev
with the ABI change. I've been trying to point out that OE.dev *is* the
development branch, I just think that people have got too
comfortable :/.
I don't think we're doing too badly given the fundamental nature of the
change though...
Cheers,
Richard

Certainly not, I was amazed at how few problems there were. I suspect
the nastiest form of problems is the renamed webkit pkgconfig file,
which means people have to manually delete WebKit*pc to get their build
to continue.
And looking back at how the stable branch has been doing I can say that
OE really *needs* .dev since the act of posting a diff for review is
already too much for most people, let alone review another.
That is why Holger and I want to properly use things like
insane.bbclass, sepukku.bbclass and testlab.bbclass to take the
gruntwork out of regression tracking and QA. Sadly we both are short on
time to work on it properly nowadays :(

Koen

It might be a good idea to package up a tarball of the stable version, if only
because it gives potential users warm fuzzies. I have the same basic
complaint about buildroot. There's no "version" to download. The difference
is I've never had a buildroot daily snapshot just work for me. I have had
openembedded.dev checkouts just work :)
Also, having to mess with monotone just to scope out the project could turn
some potential users off.
2 cents from an outsider...

And there's where you make a thinko ;) It's no a stable version, it's a
stable _branch_, so it gets fixes and things, but only _after_ being
reviewed by at least two people. Creating a tarball of that is
fundamentally no different as making a tarball from .dev: it's a
snapshot of a moment in time, while a stable branch aims to "not break,
keep working" during its lifetime.

Koen

Sorry, I got confused and was thinking stable in the Debian sense versus
stable in the Gentoo sense :) Which of course, raises the question: Where
are the OpenEmbedded ricers? ;)

And this stable branch is not present at
http://www.openembedded.org/filebrowser (which is
http://www.openembedded.org -> "browse tree" in left navbar). I sent
mail about this few weeks ago to the list and oe-core, with nor
response or action.
And that "browse tree" link is inconsistently capitalized with respect
to the other menu items, which on its own creates sloppy impression ;-).

Well, since we are facing a big move of infrastructure *and* a switch of
SCM I decided that I can do better things with my time than fixing the
above.
