Hello!
I am trying to set up a local network consisting out of two laptops
under SuSE 8.0 (kernel 2.4.18). The modem on my laptop is not working unde
r linux, so I want to use the other computer as a gateway. After dialing
in via modem on the other laptop, the routing
tables are looking like the following:
- computer 1 (141.30.17.252):
Kernel IP Routentabelle
Ziel Router Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use
Iface
141.30.17.252 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 eth0
141.30.17.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
0.0.0.0 141.30.17.253 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0
- computer 2 gateway (141.30.17.253):

From 141.30.17.252 I am able to connect to 141.30.17.253 in our local
network, but I do not have access to the outer space. I even cannot ping
to 62.104.204.34. On 141.30.17.252 I have a pcmcia network card and the
other computer has a internal network card. I am running out of idea
s how to get the network working and would appreciate all suggestions.

Have you a kernel with ip forwarding and have you enabled it ?
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
And have you same basic masquing rules ?
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
