I'm trying to boot an Ultra 5, and I get to a line similar to the
following:

CMD646: MDMA enable [SELECT SETXFER CMND wait STAT(50) SETFEATURE wait
STAT(d0) STAT(d0) STAT(d0) STAT(d0) STAT(d0) STAT(d0) STAT(d0) STAT(d0)
STAT(d0) DMA_CAP DONE]

It hangs at that point forever. I have the tftpboot.img from May 2.
Any ideas?

Do you have a IDE cdrom drive on this machine? They seem to be
problematic, if this is the case I know how to fix it though.

Yes, the Ultra5 came with an internal IDE. There is a workaround?

Yes, the Ultra5 came with an internal IDE. There is a workaround?

For the impatient you can either:

1) Disconnect the cdrom driver
2) Try multiple boots over and over, I've this technique work around
the problem for a couple crappy IDE disks I have.

Otherwise wait for the next set of kernel updates in the UP-109
distribution area.

Some feedback regarding booting UltraLinux on an
Ultra 5:

I have not been able to do a successful net boot for
UltraLinux 1.0 and 1.0.9 on an Ultra 5.

1.0: After loading the tftp boot image, there is a
      simple error message:

      Strange OBP version 'OBP 3.11.9 1998/03.06 10:31'
      Program terminated

and you're back at the ok prompt.

1.0.9: The tftp boot image is loaded, the display
switches to the white-on-black Linux display
and the usual Linux kernel boot messages show
       up. After the line:

       hdc: packet command error: status=0x0d { Busy }

the system hangs indefinitely. Looking through
the messages the only thing that looks weird
is the irq number "-1073739808" given for both
       ide0 and ide1.

I just got a Ultra 5 and want to put Ultra Penguin on it...

i have a series of questions:

1. My best bet is to go with UP 1.0.9 or RedHat 5.1?
2. Can UP support the Sun Quad Ethernet?
3. Is there a way of adapting the Sun *old?* vga connector (15 or
something pin + 2 coax) to the traditional vgs *pc?* connector in the
ultra 5 (i got a sun monitor that i like, but we got an ugly as hell new
sun monitor with the 15 pin interface).
4. Is it safe to set up this station as a firewall for 3 subnets? (stable
enough).

thanks in advance,

alberto

The "old" connector is a 13W3. Most older Sun monitors
would only work with composite sync (H and V on the
same line). Some of the latest Sun monitors (still
with 13W3 connectors, even) would work with seperate
H and V sync (the VGA standard), but it would have to
be pretty recent... like Ultra era at least. I do not
know if the Ultra 5 will do composite sync, but I would
guess not... it is an ATI Mach 64 video interface, I
believe. So, *if* your good monitor supports seperate
sync, *or if* the Ultra 5 supports composite sync, then
you would probably be able to do it. If so, you can get
13W3 to HDB-15 (VGA) adapters from a variety of sources;
one is L-Com (http://www.L-com.com -- I don't know if they
sell internationally, but their website only lists an 800
number, bad sign). Merely having the adapter won't help
if you can't get the devices to agree on sync. Actually,
Sun should be able to tell you since they are all Sun
parts.

If you are willing to take risks then you can cut open the cable in
the adapter and solder together the H and V sync lines to form a
composite sync line. This is only safe if the input impedence on your
H and V sync pins is high enough to stop excessive current.

I'm using this for my system at home, allowing me to use a nice 19"
sun monitor on my intel linux box. I've tested it on 4 different video
cards and 3 different sun monitors with no problems, but please
realise that you might fry your video card (or worse) if this doesn't
work out.

The adapter I'm using is one given to me by the local sun people. It
came off one of their javastations.

Note that their are circuits floating around on the net that show how
to properly convert H+V into composite sync. In my experience they
aren't necessary (and most require a separate power source).

Alberto,

1. Red Hat 5.1 will not work in the Ultra systems. UltraPenguin is the
solution.

3. The Sun part number for the adaptor is 530-2357-01; you should be able
to order it on line. The older monitor should work ok, I think.

The kernel guys can answer questions 2 and 4.

Hope this helps.
