(Sorry- followup to my own post)- reboot (not an umount/remount) cleared
the core dumping problem. Is this a generic/known NFS caching bug then?

What is the NFS server running?

Anyways, my current hunch is that when I merge our tree to 2.2.0-prex
this may vanish... and this I'm doing soon as the 2.2.x is now on.

That's my guess && hope. I had NFS hangs for i386 2.1.132 which seemed
to go away foer 2.2.X-pre1.
