Ok, that's good to hear. Your info, along with Randolph's info that it
traps on the 8500, 8600, and 8700 CPUs, leads me to the same conclusion
as Randolph came to. It looks like there's something wrong with the
fcnv emulation in the linux kernel's emulation handler, even though it
was derived from the hpux handler, where everything appears to work
fine.

The fadvise concept sounds somewhat promising. In the particular case of
the cifs filesystem, as long as the posix_fadvise like info were available
before the open (perhaps in the file struct) then it is trivial to pass
equivalents to most of them to the server in the network file open (in the
NTCreateX SMB PDU) information that would presumbably be ignored by many
filesystems unfortunately since the posix specs fadvise to take an open
file descriptor it makes it trickier for my particular case.

The sparse concept is interesting for my particular vfs as well - Windows
has an attribute flag presumably to allow an application to supply a hint
to the filesystem (when creating a file) that a particular inode is going
to be written sparsely. Not sure that such a concept matters at all for
my Linux vfs given that the open/create system call is so much simpler.
I now have something fun to do over the weekend - trying to figure out what
the flag really does :)

* buddy algorithm
From: Martin Herrman @ 2003-01-10 22:16 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-8086
In-Reply-To: <20030110214652Z266323-22911+21374@vger.kernel.org>

Hi all,

first I want to give a short introduction about myself. I'm a 22 year old
student computer sience at Eindhoven University of Technology, which is
located in the south of The Netherlands, Europe. I'm using Linux as
desktop and server operating system since about 3 years now. I like
motorcycles, beer and most important: I like my girlfriend :-) More about
me at http://tuxserver.dyndns.org

Now let's get to the point why I subscribed to this mailinglist: I'm
taking a course 'The Linux Kernel' at the moment and together with a
friend I have to find a nice assignment with which we will (probably :-)
pass the course. We heard about the 'buddy algorithm', which assigns
memory to processes. Now the question is: how does the ELKS project deal
with it? Does it use the same algorithm as the official linux kernel does?
Is there any interest in a different version of the algorithm which uses
fibonacci to assign memory parts to processes if they ask for it? The
fibonacci way (1,1,2,3,5,8,13, etc.) will cost some speed (compared to
1,2,4,8,16, etc.), but will yield some better utilisation of available
memory.

I'm really looking forward to your replies!

Martin

* [BUG] 2.5.5x can't find my printer
From: Bill Davidsen @ 2003-01-10 22:23 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: Linux Kernel Mailing List

[-- Attachment #1: Type: TEXT/PLAIN, Size: 386 bytes --]

The 2.5.5x kernels can't find my printer. 2.4 kernels work fine. dmesg
attached, I'll send config if anyone cares.

Known problem, new problem, or just some config error? The modules load
but don't find anything.

if it OOPSes without my patch, then it's somebody else's problem. If it
does so with my patch, but just gives the infamous "resource collisions"
message without it, then it's my fault ;)

> cs: cb_alloc(bus 1): vendor 0x115d, device 0x0003

OK.. we obviously made it *into* cb_alloc()..

> PCI: Enabling device 01:00.0 (0000 -> 0003)

This is coming out of pcibios_enable_resources() - the same function that
without my patch would have given the 'resource collisions' error and
returned.

> PCI: Setting latency timer of device 01:00.0 to 64

xircom_probe to pci_set_master to pcibios_set_master, and we've returned
from pci_enable_device. and thus we've gotten past where my patch is. Only
possibility is that my code has re-arraigned some pointers in an evil way.

Now, it's pretty obvious that *some* call to pci_assign_resource has to
happen before pci_enable_device() for these Xircom cards for things to work
at all (and note that they work just fine in 2.4 and pre-2.5.47).

I wonder if the *current* problem with the OOPs is due to this change in the
.53 patches to pci/setup_{bus,res}.c - as per the changelog:

<ink@jurassic.park.msu.ru>
	[PATCH] PCI: setup-xx fixes

Don't disable PCI devices before changing the BARs, as discussed
recently. Disabling PCI_COMMAND_MASTER bit is an obvious bug.

Further, pdev_enable_device() is a leftover from very old (2.0, I guess)
alpha PCI code. It's used in pci_assign_unassigned_resources() to
enable *every* PCI device in the system. So, if we have two graphic
cards on the same bus, both with legacy VGA IO... oops.

Actually, only alpha relied on that due to the lack of
pcibios_enable_device (which has been already fixed).

After this patch, we no longer go into pdev_enable_device, which may have
been doing something that was in fact still needed by the Xircom code,
although I'm mostly guessing that it's the 'disable the ROM'. The other
possibility is that ink's patch exposes a problem with the way my patch
calls pci_alloc_resource() before pci_enable_device().

In any case, I've attached a new *UNTESTED* patch, that only tries to gratuitously
assign resources of MEM class, and disables the ROM once it does so.

No, I don't claim to fully understand this code. And if you're not brave
enough or can't test it yourself, I'll be taking the 2.5.56 plunge sometime
this weekend. ;) And all you other kernel hackers are welcome to jump right
in and tell me what I'm doing wrong.. ;)

/Valdis

* [PATCH] module-init-tools-0.9.7, depmod and GPL-only symbols
From: Petr Vandrovec @ 2003-01-10 22:16 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: rusty; +Cc: linux-kernel

Hi Rusty,
I finally got 2.5.56 running with configuration I always used (== almost
everything modular), and I found that module-init-tools-0.9.7 has small
problem with GPL-only symbols: depmod ignores them :-(

As I did not notice any newer version, please apply patch below if you
did not do something simillar already.

Of course you can create better solution, which will actually check
license and so on, but I just decided to leave this task on kernel, as
I believe that we do not want such code duplication between kernel and
module-init-tools.
						Thanks,
							Petr Vandrovec

* [BENCHMARK] IPC performance of recent kernels (ctxbench)
From: Bill Davidsen @ 2003-01-10 22:16 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: Linux Kernel Mailing List

Sad to say, the IPC rates have been going down since 2.4.18, and I suspect
that will show up in the performance of threaded and cooperating
applications. To some extent the new pthread will help some of this, but
comparing results with a new library vs. old is not useful for measuring
what the kernel is doing.

The column avg/MHz is used for comparing the same system at several CPU
speeds, and getting some feel for P-II, P-II, Athlon and P-IV performance
normalized to clock speed. These test are all on one system at the same
speed, so it's just a number. Likewise the spinlock test is not useful on
uni machines and can be ignored here.

I will have similar results on other systems as I get the chance.

Config descriptions and results follow.

It might be a bug in binutils but if it's a bug in binutils it's only
triggered in 2.5. I've seen it in 2.5 for several weeks now and the 2.4
and 2.5 examples I sent in my initial mail were both from today's
compilations and there was definitely no package upgrade on my system
between them.

I've attached the .config that triggered it in 2.5.55.

Thanks. I forgot to say that it applies on top of Willem Riede's signal
changes patch.

I've pushed it up to scsi-misc-2.5 to make the dependencies easier to manage.

Hmm.. Can you try to pinpoint more exactly the change that caused it?

Don't pull one at a time - instead just get my latest BK tree, and then
you can do

bk clone -ql -rXXXX linus-BK test-tree

to get a tree with the top-of-tree being XXXX.

Together with "bk revtool" you can traverse the merge tree to decide on
interesting points you want to back up further with. If, for example,
the kernel still doesn't work at XXXX, you can then do a

	cd test-tree
	bk revtool
.. find an interesting spot YYYY ...
	bk undo -aYYYY

to clip some changes from the test-tree to see if that helps.

I'm betting ssh isn't fully disconnecting/exiting because your nohup
command, while jamming the process into the background, still has an
open pipe- specifically stdin.

try this.
nohup make bootstrap &> build.log < /dev/null &

Pulling from (possibly faulty) memory, if login/ssh detects a open
pipe to a user/tty's stdin, stdout, or stderr, it blocks and waits
for the pipe to close...

I will try to test it today or tomorrow. I am already setup for some
error handler fault tests for a qlogicisp error handling update.

Maybe I am completely wrong, but if I remember correctly as long as you
don't "enqueue" your low latency packets more than once, it should be ok.
And for your setup maybe "prio" is a better choice than "htb", but if
the game servers don't mark their traffic correctly maybe high priority
traffic could be treated as low priority.

Check the manpage for "prio" (man tc-prio), or lartc.org for detailled
information about this classfull queuing discipline.

Hope it helps.

* 2.4.21-pre3-ac2 oops
From: Magnus Månsson @ 2003-01-10 22:09 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: alan, linux-kernel

Hi,
I have a problem while accessing one of my partitions. It started with
oopses when I was rsyncing to the partition. After that I thought that I
should run fsck and that also made my system oops.

I have the same problem with 2.4.21-pre3-ac3, but it started in -ac2.

My system is a Dell inspiron 8200 and here is my config and oops ran
through ksymoops:

---[start oops]---

ksymoops 2.4.8 on i686 2.4.21-pre3-ac3. Options used
     -V (default)
     -k /proc/ksyms (default)
     -l /proc/modules (default)
     -o /lib/modules/2.4.21-pre3-ac3/ (default)
     -m /boot/System.map-2.4.21-pre3-ac3 (default)

Warning: You did not tell me where to find symbol information. I will
assume that the log matches the kernel and modules that are running
right now and I'll use the default options above for symbol resolution.
If the current kernel and/or modules do not match the log, you can get
more accurate output by telling me the kernel version and where to find
map, modules, ksyms etc. ksymoops -h explains the options.

Could you try the included patch against the ZT5550 driver out and let
me know if it works better for you? I dug through the host controller
docs that Performance Tech provided me, so now the driver only registers
the appropiate cPCI buses that are active. I think this suffices for
now, but things will become more complicated if/when someone wants to
expand the driver to do redundant system slot stuff.

Note that the patch is also available from:

ftp://oss.somanetworks.com/pub/linux/cpci/v2.5/linux-2.5.55-cpcihp_zt5550-1.patch

and while it's against 2.5.55, should also apply cleanly against 2.5.54
and probably against the 2.4.19 patch I released on pcihpd-discuss a
while back.

By the way, the group of Darryl Veitch have done some extremely
interesting work with high-resolution timestamps, in particular
using the TSC on recent ia32:

http://www.cubinlab.ee.mu.oz.au/probing/
http://www.cubinlab.ee.mu.oz.au/~darryl/tscclock_final.pdf.gz

One general issue in this area is what we can do with time
sources that aren't system-wide, e.g. NIC-local timers. The
problem is to calibrate them and to synchronize them to
wall-clock time. I think there are basically two possible
approaches:

 1) driver gives time synchronization system (in user-space)
access to "raw" running timer value. Timestamps are also
"raw" timer values, plus a time source ID, which can then
be used to convert the values to wall-clock time.

 2) user space pushes exact time to kernel space, which then
does all the math. Timestamps are already converted to
    wall-clock time.

2) is essentially what we can do with today's interfaces (an
event notifier would be useful, though). The big drawback is
that non-trivial math would have to be done in kernel space.
1) is much easier on the kernel, but has the issue of
requiring some API to get time values and time source
characteristics (time representation, range, etc.).

I'm leaning towards solution 1), because it keeps things simple
for the kernel. But perhaps the best approach is to simply
implement both, and then compare ...

* menucofig[2.5.56] bug: help texts in "choice"
From: Dominik Brodowski @ 2003-01-10 22:04 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: zippel; +Cc: linux-kernel

Hi,

In 2.5.56 I'm seeing a bug in "make menuconfig" on x86: selecting "processor
type and features", then "processor family", and then "help" for any entry,
I always get "There is no help available for this kernel option." even
though there are extensive help texts in arch/i386/Kconfig.

BTW, just noticed that same is true for:
x86 - processor type and features - subarch
x86 - processor type and features - highmem
x86 - Bus options - PCI access mode
...

maybe a bug for the "choice" entry?

It's a big "depends". Some SCSI controllers will assign BIOS
id's for everything found on the bus, starting at 0x80 for
an ID. Others don't. In fact, some will assign a CD/ROM to
0x00 (Drive A) even if it doesn't contain a boot record. When
that assignment occurs, it's space in the boot-order gets
filled in with the next available drive. It's a mess and you
can't count on anything except that 0x80 will be lowest numbered
"fixed-disk" drive found. That's why you should boot from it,
even if the BIOS allows you to boot from others.

Um.. hey! Just because we weren't trying to merge with you during 2.5

 2.5.26
 2.5.32
 2.5.41
 2.5.43
 2.5.44
 2.5.45
 2.5.46
 2.5.47
 2.5.50
 2.5.51
 2.5.53
 2.5.54

Our outstanding diff vs your tree is about 200k gzipped and it's almost
all drivers. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any core changes
we still need. I don't think we're using any deprecated interfaces
(eg flush_page_to_ram, unlike m68k, mips, mips64, sparc32 & v850).

Of course, I don't consider having working PA-RISC in your tree to be
a prerequisite for release. I just object to being used as an example :-P

I've done some more investigation into this matter, it seems like the whole
problem stems from a timing issue:

I reconfigured the Gbit interface to use a static ip-adress, but the problem
persisted: The interface comes up seemingly all right during the init process
in the normal bootup sequence, but the subsequent ypbind fail to find any
ypservers.

So, the problem doesn't have anything to do with dhcp, at least, so it seems
to me. But, if I put in a sleep 60 after ifup in the /etc/init.d/network
script, everything is ok.

To me, an illiterate when it comes to drivers and network hardware, it seems
like the network card (or driver) needs some time to get ready to serve after
beeing configured. Again, the problem only occurs when running Gbit, it
never shows up when I connect to a 100Mbit switch.

Well, I think I've pulled enough hair out of my head over this. I'll just
have to bite the bullet and rig all the machines with an extra cable and use
the 100Mbit interface for the network installs. Another day of stretching
cables, sigh...

A big thanks to all who have replied to me with suggestions, especially Bill.

Eh? In general case, to make room for newly added device, you have
to shutdown the whole PCI bus starting from level 0, reassign _all_
BARs and bridge windows and then restart...
The "hotplug resource reservation" is the only viable approach, it has
been discussed numerous times.

100% agree. :-)

I believe 1GB is a theoretical maximum for a 32-bit BAR. Everything above
that has to be 64-bit.
