i just knew it before...
here... i want to mention one strange thing...
if i "touch" for hd? device "hided" by ide-scsi kmod will request for a module and
system will load ide-scsi... curious... don't you think?

Hello!
I download the 2.6.1-kernel from kernel.org. I have compilied it. At
booting it stop at the following line:
NET: Registered protocol family 20
That is all!
I have set CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEPCI, CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA_PCI,
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SIS5513 und CONFIG_EXT3_FS to yes. But it does not work.
I get no kernel panic.
Can anybody help me. Thanks.

I have to reload the sd-mod module when changing cards. Have you
tried that?

I'm taking a class in assembly programming where all the assignments
have to be written in MASM syntax. I couldn't find a linux assembler
that couldn't work on MASM syntax, but that might be because I know so
very little about the subject that I may have overlooked it.
Is there a linux assembler that can handle MASM syntax?

Yeah... parport locking primitives (and, frankly, the rest of parport
API) apparently had been designed on serious drugs.
I'm cleaning up that crap; some patches are already in -mm, more will
follow. In particular, yes, parprt_claim()/parport_claim_or_block()/
parport_release() is racy and most of the users have problems with
missing wakeups.

You are right, sorry.. It's TS0 not LSO in Linux and Unix. After doing
first ndis Send offload implementation back at Alteon, LSO acronym got
engraved into my brain :-)

Will do. Also - it's a bit embarrassing to admit but I suspect 2.6
installations that my test and development teams do are still more art
than science, I'm not sure we always end up with a trusted setup. Could
someone point me towards a good description of upgrading to 2.6 kernel,
either from RH AS 3.0 or from Suse distribution?

We've done couple quick tests on this recently with benchmarking
software - Chariot has some scripts that use sendfile(), and also one of
nttcp versions has -f option. In both cases, using sendfile() did not
seem to improve the maximum send performance on 10GbE; we are planning
to do some more testing though...

The driver is definitely getting large send requests, if this is what
you are asking. Our testing with 2.6 up to date is pretty limited, but
on some server configurations we see some noticeable performance gain
from TSO (the gain is smaller than from LSO in Windows though), on other
setups performance with TSO enabled is the same or even less that
without TSO enabled.

The Fedora gcc-ssa compiler has this problem, but claims to be 3.5. So
at a minimum, we'd need to document the Fedora breakage and stick a
big "Don't do that" on it.

It works for me with the hammer branch gcc 3.3 with -funit-at-a-time.
Are you sure the exception table sorting patch was properly applied?

Hey all,
I recently upgraded to 2.6.2-rc1-mm3 and now I can't here anything via the snd-intel8x0 module, it worked perfectly in 2.6.2-rc1 vanilla. I tested to see if it was a speaker glitch by hooking up another sound card which worked fine, any ideas?

ppc pmac ide has known problems withe residual data counts for dma
transfers. basically it's a limitation in the ide dma api.

first of all, please excuse me mailing to netdev for a not directly
kernel related Linux networking question - i didn't find any other place
where i could ask...
I recently started playing around with multicast routing for educational
purposes; multicast client software was easy to write, ran well and
there were lots of docs about setsockopts etc.
Continuing on my way, I'm trying to write a simple IGMP querier now, but
even getting started turns out to be pretty difficult here, almost no
docs exist (well, the FreeBSD manpage...). I tried everything coming to
my mind, but i wasn't even able to get to receiving all IGMP packets on
an interface.

so, 2 questions:
* what sockopts are neccessary to get all IGMP packets (all multicast
groups) on a raw socket? (MRT_INIT / MRT_ADD_VIF should do it, but it
doesn't work)
* is it possible to bind VIFs to interface indices? in ipmr.c / struct
vifctl there is no ifindex parameter (real interface, not vif)
as you can see from the 2nd question, i at least tried reading the
kernel source (2.6.1), but i don't know the stack so its difficult to
understand...

You know, this problem and other similar ones related to module unloading
would go away if modules behaved more like other kernel objects:
if they could be unregistered (rmmod) at any time, regardless
of their refcount;
if they would persist in an unregistered state, until they were
released (unloaded from memory) when the refcount dropped to 0.
Then it wouldn't be necessary for a module's exit routine to wait when
unregistering devices. A device could simply hold a reference to the
module; when the device was released and things were safe the module would
be unloaded. The one exception would no longer exist.
Is there some reason why modules don't work like this?

Hi...
I am trying to build sensors 2.8.3 and it fails with:
make: *** No rule to make target `mach_mpspec.h', needed by `kernel/chips/vt1211.d'. Stop.
There is no mach_mpspec.h in include/linux nor include/linux/asm in the kernel
tree (I use 2.6.2-rc1-mm3). It is not included directly by sensors, but for
example, mpspec.h reads:
werewolf:/usr/src/linux/include/asm# grep mach_mpspec.h *
mpspec.h:#include <mach_mpspec.h>
all mach_mpspec.h are inside subarch dirs in include/asm (for example,
include/asm/mach-default/).
Workaround is to add -I/usr/src/linux/include/asm/mach-default.
But should not the contents be symlinked for the proper subarch ? IE
/usr/src/linux/include/asm/mach_mpspec.h -> mach-default/mach_mpspec.h

I think that's just paranoia. IIRC, I was more confident about command-line
switches getting through xterm than open file descriptors. I think I needed
to pass an open file descriptor through telnetd because there is no way to
influence the command line of the -L login program.

that was it.... the MD5 sum was something like 2.... so i reinstalled binutils
and it worked.... but now i got problems (like everytime) with the modules.
I get many messages:
modprobe: modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/
modules/2.4.21-99-default/modules.dep (no such file or dir.)
i did make modules_install. Where's my fault ?

Yep, and now it works :)
Now I'm running 2.6.1-mm4, tested both UP and SMP (SMT) and it boots just
fine. Later I'll try with more recents releases, but I'm pretty sure that
these will work.

I used a BK->CVS gateway on kernel.bkbits.net
for some time, but it is already several
month that I can't connect to it any more.
Is it still alive?

I suppose the memory operand specification is required here. Newer
compilers (especially gcc-3.4) can optimize away local variables if you
only access the address but not the contents. I think even your
pthreads version is not really correct, because it specifies (*(a)) as
output only instead of inout.

No, putting the barrier into __ldcw is wrong because it would impact all
other uses of __ldcw that don't need the barrier. AFAICS, the
_raw_spin_lock needs to be changed to the below.

barrier(); } while (0)
Since the assembly output of the test program with gcc-3.3 looks good,
this probably did not do any harm so far.

Okay ...you have a LAN inside the DSL modem that has
externally routable IPs on different subnets, and you want
to setup an internal routing table that knows all of these
hosts.
One question ... what is the physical setup involved?
i.e. are all the boxes involved connected directly to the DSL modem?
is the Linux/Iptables box the only box connected to the DSL modem, and
the downstream boxes are connected to a switch/hub off a secondary
interface off the firewall box?
-- I suspect from your description we are looking at DSLmodem/router to
separate boxes ...
