It'd make the code a damned sight simpler and cleaner if you dropped
all that stuff, and updated the structures when you hotplugged a CPU,
which is really the only sensible way to do it anyway ...
For instance, if I remove cpu X, then bring back a new CPU on another node
(or in another HT sibling pair) as CPU X, then you'll need to update all
that stuff anyway. CPUs aren't fixed position in that map - the ordering
handed out is arbitrary.

Yup ... but you don't have to enumerate all possible positions that way.
See Linus' arguement re dynamic device numbers and ISCSI disks, etc.
Same thing applies.

Yeah, it's not trivially simple. But then neither is the rest of CPU
hotplug, to do it right ;-) Requiring CPU hotplug callback hooks does
seem to be the right way to interface with the sched code though ...

Hi, Martin:
In a recent changeset in Linus' tree, there's your diff which blows up
the dasd naming scheme, with the comment:
- Change dasd names from "dasdx" to "dasd_<busid>_".
This breaks mkinitrd, nash, and mount by label (not to mention every
zipl.conf out there, because root= aliases to /sys/block/%s).
Would you please explain what exactly you were thinking when you
submitted that patch?

Notice that swsusp needs half of physical memory free by design. That
means that we need _some_ freeing. Nigel's swsusp2 works around that
at cost of more complicated implementation.

I have enforced a firewall, using iptables-1.2.6a, on a target board running TimeSys Linux Kernel(Kernel version is 2.4.7-10).
I have applied the *tftp* patch available in the patch-o-matic.
When I try to do a tftp "get" or "put" from a PC in a different subnet to this board, the system crashes. An Oops is generated during the init_conntrack function in ip_conntrack_core.c

netfilter firewall is made up of two separate but related components.
kernel modules do the low level stuff and a userspace application
manipulates what the low level stuff actually does.
the "iptables" command is part of the userspace component
-- look for xxxx/lib/iptables directory to see the userspace
libraries --- look for xxxx/bin/iptable* xxx/bin/ip6table*
to find the executables.
/lib/modules/*/kernel/net/ipv*/netfilter contains the kernel module
components -- yours might be built into the kernel.
Yes ... java needs to talk through 127.0.0.1 and blocking all traffic through
lo and the ip address 127.0.1 will cause problems.

The attached patch ensures that we grab vfsmount_lock when grabbing a
reference to mnt_parent in follow_up and follow_dotdot.
We also don't need to access ->mnt_parent in follow_mount and
__follow_down to mntput because we already the parent pointer on the stack.

I'm not sure what "as expected" means with this small a limit, hopefully
not "pages its butt off." I am printing a hardcopy of the 2nd patch and
a bit of the surrounding code, and also compiling a new kernel with the
patch in place, so I can play a bit in the morning.
I also wonder if a sanity check is desirable on the minimum size. At
some point I would think the system would get a lot of overhead trying
to actually use a single 1k page :-(
Thanks for this prompt implementation, I do have a few applications
which can use it!

here is the second release of kpartx : the shameless perversion of util-linux's
partx.
As before it :
1) compiles against klibc
2) read partitions table like partx
3) drives the device mapper to present the partitions bdevs

This release adds a interesting functionality : it can now read partitions
tables from regular files, automagically assign a loop device (like the mount
cmd), and map devmaps from here.

The second description is correct. Netfilter is the kernel support for
firewalls, and iptables is the userspace tool which 'jacks' into the
kernel.

It could be that you are blocking traffic to or from 'lo' or localhost.
Make sure that you leave this alone. I know that java often uses ports
for various mickel-muck. Anyways, also does port 6000 work correctly?
Maybe if you described your base rules, I could tell you where you're
problem is originating from.

I have encountered a very strange (to me, at least) error. I can
reliably cause xmms to crash by simply doing some intensive disk IO.
Copying a few hundred megabytes usually does it. After about 20
seconds of heavy disk IO, xmms will die with this message:

Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x2ef5c)!
The hex number varies.
The machine is an Alpha SX164 running Linux 2.6.2-rc2 patched up to
ALSA 1.0.1. The problem has been around for quite a while, probably
also with kernel 2.4.21, though I can't confirm that at the moment.
The sound card is a cmi8738.
If I play music with TCVP instead, it keeps playing, but sound is
choppy at intervals. Below is vmstat output during a copying.

Whenever there was a high value for "bo" the sound was really choppy.
I don't mind an occasional glitch in the sound too much, but the fact
that xmms died makes me a little nervous. What's worse, yesterday it
even corrupted the playlist file on disk rather badly.
The filesystems are XFS on device-mapper on raid1 over raid0 on four
disks connected to a hpt374 controller.
Should I just call it an xmms bug, or should I start digging for
hardware problems or kernel bugs?

Well this would be the problem. I guess its quite possible that
one doesn't know the topology of newly added CPUs before hand.
Well OK, this would require a per architecture function to handle
CPU hotplug. It could possibly just default to arch_init_sched_domains,
and just completely reinitialise everything which would be the simplest.

With kernel 2.4.23 or 2.4.24 + 9a4gl patch the system is very unstable (we
can't have more that 4 days of uptime)
What are we doing at this moment? Run 2.6.1 without FBB ... and wait for a FBB
modification.
With 2.6.1 all runs OK .

Why some people gets so much spam ??, I'm getting like 20-50 at
most(usually less), and I post to slashdot, i'm suscribed to several
mailing lists. I have 3 mail accounts, all of the for years, more than
7.
I get about 1 or 2 spams on my inbox, and sa-learn has worked quite well
on my box.
I have never received a "random words" spam.
It's kind of weird.
Do the pople that gets ~600 spamd daily get a lot of repeated messages
or they are all different ?

will make your life easier if you just want tcc (compiler) not tcsim

You bind() one and then listen() on it. If one connect() to it, you accept()
and use this file descriptor to communicate and bind and listen on a new one.
So now you have the problem:
You have multiple sockets open and must handle it all at once. You have
the option of nonblocking I/O with stupid polling or better with select()
which notifies you if a socket has data for you.
Or the forking of childs, each child takes the accepted socket and the
parent opens a new one. If we fork for every new connection, we lose the
queue and need shared memory, other ipc, pipes or files...
But the problem is getting more complex if you want to do other thing at
the same time like exec a list of udevs in the background and handle
timeouts...
This is all possible with a single process, but I don't want to debug
such a beast.
All problems magically go away with threads, cause we share the same address
space and let the kernel schedule our tasks.

There has been report of non-regression on non-SMP kernel with the following
patches applied (2.6.2-rc1 serie):

Can you confirm that the driver behaves the same as the standard driver
with a non-SMP enabled kernel ?
Does it make a difference if you give an 'acpi=off' option at boot time ?
r8169-addr-high.patch is not doing its job on amd64 so it is not suggested
to use it at all.
There is something broken wrt SMP and the r8169 patches: do not use both at
the same time. I still have to find what happens here.

I tried the suggestions and was able to force the error to occur. I took
the box out of service and ran memtest86 for a week and got a bunch of
errors. The problem appears to have been caused by faulty hardware.
I have the exact same configuration running in a box with duplicate
hardware and am not having any problems.
